US Embassy Interviews

  1. I believe you are on a J1 visa(college) and a Q-1 is the year long cultural rep. as Far as I am aware we have to await for several forms to arrive one of which is from Disney before we attend the embassy, however we can make the appointment in advance.

So today was the morning of the London Embassy visit, I put some extra savlon on my tiny cut on my finger (Yummy said not go to a visa interview with one ) for luck and headed off on the 06.16 train, the Jubilee line was horrible so to cut a long story short I got there, and on time! At 08:20 for an 08:30 interview, turning up late was good as there was a queue for those going for 09:00 interviews and in the cold it didnt look much fun!

The nice Group 4 Securicor people let me in straight away with no hassle (just needed to metal scan my stuff and check passport). Then you walk around and in through a door where a guy checks your papers and issues you with a ticket number.

You then go and wait in a room, for me it was about 30 minutes, enough time for a nice cup of coffee and purchasing the excellent range of american candy they had there.

So then my number came up and they call you to the first window and check all your papers and let you fill out any small mistakes or things needing adding to, the lady at my booth was particularly helpful. They also take scans of both hands and then your thumbs.

Then they take all your stuff away and give you a piece of paper for the postage and with your ticket number on it, then they say to wait for your ticket number to come up.

On the postage sheet is the ominious warning "This may take several hours", my own wait though was 15 minutes before being called to a second window where a guy checked my paperwork again, asked me what I was doing in the US, why I applied and what I was going to do after I finished. They also rescan your fingers to check the original scan worked good.

So I answered all the questions, I hope calmly, but you never look very relaxed infront of immigration officials, they ask you the questions very quickly.

Then I went and quickly paid for my postage, I got the special 8am postage, the Normal cost is £14, and you can pay extra to get earlier, from £5.50 for midday to £21 for before 8am.

So now I have the 5 day wait.

All in all the embassy was far less intimidating than I thought it would be, and was very quick and efficient in sorting out my paperwork with little waiting around, the american candy was also a bonus!
