Suppose this is where being an IT engineer helps :p

From what I can gather the apartment has an ethernet socket on the wall and we will be able to use a regular ethernet router (I would recommend the Linksys WRT54G, good for range) and it will work just fine, no need to keep a laptop tethered to the wall at all :D

theres a router already installed on the wall, wireless is a bit poor, but if you just take the ethernet cables you can connect by them

It still makes absolutely no sense what so ever but i'll take your word for it and have a look at those Linksys things! Thanks!
I think i'll pay a bit extra for the better internet... it's the only way I can keep up with my friends and i'm an avid blogger so it should be worth it!

im the same i think i will be paying for the better internet. also i have no idea what you are talking about lol im so untechnical so i think ill just leave the router thing until i get there and then see what everyone else has done!

so another question...i dont even have a laptop at the moment but i am buying one to take, but is it best to buy one in the UK or in the US (im going on holiday there in June so could technically get one then). im assuming it would be slightly cheaper to get one in the US, but also are there any differences between them, like if i got one from the US, would it be the same as one from the UK, obviously other than the wall sockets.

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question...but as i said im not very technical lol!!

I don't think the difference would be much. I'm norwegian and I bought a laptop in the US. But I bought a computer that also exists in norway since we have some extra letters in the norwegian alphabet... There's no difference between my US laptop and the norwegian one I had before ;)

But apart from letters (I think this is what nstrats means!) are there any technical differences do you know? Like sockets, or different wires are needed? That sort of thing!

...As you can tell i'm not very technical either ahaha.

if you get a laptop at home you would need a plug adapter for the american socket, but if you buy a laptop in america you wouldn't need it. but you when you go home you would need to either get an adapter so it would ork with your plugs at home or a new power lead. Other than that everything else, apart from a few of the keys will be the same.

Yup, the easiest thing is to buy the adapter in walmart that works everywhere in the world. I have that one, so it's easy to use my computer at home or to use anything electrical when I'm traveling ;D

Basically all laptops and computers are the same (for the most part) no matter where in the world you buy them they just have different keyboard layouts (e.g. @ on the Uk keyboard where " is on the US keyboard) and the plug, if you use a computer at home that has a standard english, or near to that then I would recommend buying one out there.

I was looking at buying one over there at the same model over here in the UK was around $600 more but then my laptop broke so I bought a new one in the UK anyway, unfortunately the dollar is really weak at the moment (bad for America, good for us foreigners :p)

Yay, less than a week until I fly and i'm completely shitting it :p

I'm DEFINATELY going to bring my laptop. I don't think I've gone a day without it lol. But I wouldn't bother downloading or anything like that I guess cuz it'll probably take forever. You will need an ethernet cable cuz wireless can be pretty unreliable :p I don't know what it's like in the states but even my wireless connection that i get through my home connection via a router doesn't work that well sometimes (i can't figure out how to put a password thing on it :() and when i lived in a dorm at university wireless was unbelievabley slow with everyone leeching off everyone else...anyhoo long story short if you have a laptop bring it ;D (and definitely bring it as a carry on on the plane, and download a bunch of music and/or movies you think you'll want before you leave ;))
