still thinking about bringing my mobile :-\ if I make a call back home (Holland) it would be sooooo very expensive.

how much is it to buy a simcard over there and does it fit in every phone I've got the D600.

    Hi everybody!

I've decided to do the following:

    1. I am bringing my European phone with me, but as soon as I am connected with an American operator I will just not use it to call but only be called (still expensive, I know). My subscription doesn't end until the end of September. After my subscription has ended I will (have to change) from mobile operator in The Netherlands since my current operator doesn't allow taking your number to a pre-paid plan. (For the Dutch among us, I am switching from Orange to probably KPN although I have always been satisfied with the service Orange provides, it is just the situation that doesn't allow any other sollution and I want to limit the costs).

    2. I will buy a Net10 phone when I arrive in the US. I really like their pre-paid plans. 10 cents throughout the US, 15 cents to The Netherlands. It seems the best deal and they offer phones starting at $40 and you get top-up worth of $30 which means you only pay some $10 for your phone. If anyone doesn't agree or has bad experience with Net10 or whatever else in that direction do tell me and save from the horror of getting the wrong deal here!

    3. I will most likely use instant messenger and Skype like software to connect with home. It is very cheap, 10 cents per minute when you dial a land line or free of charge if the other person uses the program on the computer as well.

How does this plan sound? To me...very good!

    Hi Hazel,
I'm with 3 and they said that I could sign it over to a friend or someone, maybe other networks will do the same, eveything gets tranferred, month bills will go out of their account. Hope this helps

    Re: Mobiles... Disney Mobile

Does anybody have any clue about Disney Mobile?

It will be launched in June and maybe they have special deals for cast members. That would be awesome! Can somebody figure that one out???

Disney Moble would be sweet if they had a cast member discount.

Virgin Mobile and T-Mobile look the best to me (since coverage is very important)

I still think Net10/TracFone have a pretty sweet deal!

They roam on all the major carriers apparently and Net10 is Florida based so I assume they will most likely have the best coverage there (check out this forum).

So I like their rates, I like their coverage now too! ;D

OK...maybe you can be a little more specific.

When you'd but the Net10 Nokia 1100 for $40, you'll receive 300 minutes of airtime.

This is what http://www.Net10.com/ does in their comparison chart:

    ServiceT-MobileNet10
Per-minute rateVaries by card: $10.00 at 34¢ per minute, $25.00 at 20¢, $50.00 at 13¢, and $100.00 at 10¢ per minute.10¢ per minute, anytime anywhere.
Domestic Long Distance & RoamingIncluded only on the T-Mobile To Go network.US nationwide and Puerto Rico.
Text Messaging10¢ per message sent / FREE to receive.5¢ per message.
411$1.25 per call plus airtime.10¢ per minute.
International Long DistanceCanada and Mexico: airtime + 40¢ per minute. Puerto Rico: airtime + 30¢ per minute. Other countries: airtime + 80¢ to $1.50 per minute.Airtime + 5¢ = 15¢ flat-rate per minute to Mexico, Canada and over 40 other destinations worldwide.

It still looks as though Net10 has a better deal. Maybe, depending on the duration of your stay, you may be better of with T-Mobile. I am still having a good feeling about this company. If anybody disagrees, or believes the data in the table is incorrect, let me know! You can also compare to other mobile networks on their website Net10.com .

Q: Isn't it always free to receive an SMS? Can somebody answer that?

Hmm, its usually free. Some networks do charge you if you receive texts from outside of their own network, I believe Verizon are guilty of this, not sure about other networks, but from what I understand T-Mobile don't charge you to receive! I've already got a T-Mobile Sim card so i'm gonna stick with them, paid £29 for it and got $30 credit! Works for me :)

Cingular also charge for texts. I will still be with Cingular again, though, as I want GPRS data access and they are the only network that seems to allow it. If anyone knows different...let me know!

Why are you interested in GPRS??? You don't need that type of access when you are in Florida on the Disney program, right? Or do you have other plans?

Anyway, I don't know about any others but I think T-Mobile and Verizon do offer this too, just not sure if they offer it on pre-paid plans. I believe that most of the time when we came roaming in the States we were able to use GPRS on all large mobile networks.

Not sure about Net10. You can email them, they reply really fast! I assume not though as they seem to only offer the basic service of calling and SMSing.

'Guess you should do a bit more research there, I didn't take GPRS into account because I didn't think I need it. So do tell if it is important.

GPRS really is not important whatsoever....I am just awkward and used to having e-mail everywhere :p

My research last year favoured Cingular for pre-paid, I'm fairly sure the other networks had either a 'walled garden' or no access at all. I'm fairly sure it's right...just wondered if anyone happened to know different!
