Not sure about all phone cards but have run into many problems with them. You often lose minutes in silly ways making the actual cost per minute closer to 10 and 15 cents, then sometimes you can't get through to the access number because it is always busy. Found this website for telus and the have some good deals on phone cards.

Depending on your cell phone you can get it unlocked and buy a plan down in Florida but use your own phone by transferring over the sim chip. it can be complicated by what type of phone you have, but if you love your phone it might be worth checking into. But no one up here in Canada would know for sure what the plans are like down in Florida.

Vonage also works, if you want to be using a proper handset.

I had a plan with AT&T down there. It allowed me to call anywhere in Canada, the US or Puerto Rico ( called there on a daily basis ::) ). It made my life so easy to be able to have my friends and fam from home call it whenever they wanted and I could call them on my breaks or from the pool (to rub it in). The only problem was paying the stupid bill!!! My parents agreed to pay it (like $60 a month!!!) so they could always find me (ick), but AT&T couldn't charge to their Canadian credit card, so they had to get money orders and such from home. And there were issues with getting the last bill even MAILED to Canada. Large pain in the bum. Don't think I would recommend AT&T, but I would recommend suggesting something to this idea to parents back home who are concerned about their poor child and want to be able to check in on them.

    OK few questions

    - What network are those $40 Nokia Walmart phones on? Are they the way to go just for the summer program?

    - Any luck with finding cheap long distance phone cards

    - Probably more technical, my Telus Mobility phone is an LG 5450. Since I'm kind of dumb I don't know, but can that phone be "unlocked" and does that mean I can activate it on a US network, and then switch it back to Telus when I get home?

  9. everyone! don't even bother bringing your own cell phone, everyone and their dog just buys the $40 nokia phone. It's a good phone and has cheap minutes and good texting/voice mail plan. If you do bring your own phone you have to get it unlocked and you still have to buy the Nokia to get the new sim card so you may as well use it.

Hey Guys! I am going to bring this post back because I really can't decide what to do about a cell... all I know is i'm pretty sure I can't live without one haha

Do the majority of people go with the pay as you go/nokia plans from Walmart?... or do a lot of people bring their cells from home? I've heard a lot of talk about t-mobile plans as well, but the plans i've seen through them, verizon and cingular all make you commit to a 2-year contract... which I really don't want to do.

    Any info would be great!

    Thanks,

    Steph

I am REALLY struggling with this as well!! I have to get rid of my BELL CANADA LG phone before I leave!! I have to pay $200 to get out of the plan firstly!! I GOTS to have unlimited TEXT messaging so I can continue to contact my parents daily!! Since my brother passed away, I have been keeping in CLOSE contact with them!!! So....what do we DO here???
Do I get a phone BEFORE I leave from the net......this is a BIG DEAL to me and I have to make sure I have one!! I DO NOT want to pay BELL ANOTHER $20 on top of my $60 plan NOW!!!

I have a telus phone and I am on a contract. I asked them what I could do and he told me that I could put my phone on hold and not pay anything for the 6 months I am going to be in Florida and those 6 months would be added to the end of my contract, at no extra charge. I am probably going to get a walmart pay as you go phone when I am down there :D it seems like the cheapest way to go, and I dont really care what my phone looks like!
