no TV, but there is cable. I know there are pots and pans, but some people, if they like to cook have special utensils or pots they like to use, so i guess you could bring some just in case.....

dvd player??? that might be useful.....

You'll need a TV if there isn't one allready in your room, and then a VCR if you want one (I'm probably going to get a Tivo I think... expensive but I can bring it home anyway).

They told us at the presentation in Motreal you need linins.

I have no clue about the rest but I'd assume you need towels.

  4. There are no TV's but if you are put in to an apartment with people already living there, most likely they will have a TV already...
You do have to bring/buy your own linens but you won't have a chance to go to Walmart and buy them untill your 2nd day there so you may want to bring some vaccum packed.
You have to buy work shoes when you get there also...

It's all really well explained in the hire packet you'll recieve so don't worry about it, they give you ALL info needed. :D

Don't forget, it all depends on whether you move into a bare apartment or one already 'working' My roomies and I moved into a bare apartment. Let me tell you... we had to buy so much. Thank god we got along well and easily decided who was going to buy what. Some of my mates moved into 'working' apartments and their roomies had already been there for awhile so they didn't need to buy much. Some of the things I remember us having to buy:
    - dvd player - toilet brushes - laundry detergent/softener sheets
    - tv - two cordless phones - hangers for your clothes
    - toilet paper - all household cleaners/towels/scrubbers
    - toaster - answering machine - proper kettle(the one supplied is garbage)
    - not sure if they have WIFI now but back in '04 you had to buy an ethernet cable for your laptop, annoying because you HAD to stay in your living room
    - better pans, the pots are decent, but the pans were just terrible
    - again, better knives for cutting big/tough things

And the list goes on!!! You learn to live with few luxuries unless you come down rich and have a car, because lugging everything from Walmart(unless you split a cab) is torture! Not to mention a waste of 2-3 hours. The one luxury I had to buy, a PROPER showerhead. The ones already supplied are horrific. I borrowed a wrench from the clubhouse and installed the new one. Also, another helpful thing is one of those hanging shoe organizers. We put it right at the front closet, unavoidable. My roomies seemed to each own 15 pairs of shoes and I could not STAND tripping over them everytime I left/came in the apartment.

    Hope this info helps!

This is a HUGE HELP!! I have SEVERAL of the things but the thing that SUCKS is that the shipping would KILL me I am SURE!! I DOUBT that I would have any close friends going down when I was going which in it's self would help out.....LARGE!!!

  7. hey thanks littlefeather, that list was awesome.
Did you do the year long?
It seems so random how they put people into empty apartments or stick them in with other people...maybe it has something to do with people getting termed and dropping out?...

You buy whatever you need to survive. You'll just have to wait and see what you feel you need and can afford. Luckily, I'm from Canada and my parents were driving down not long after I got there, so they brought me everything I wanted from home. Make friends with people who are leaving soon and see what you can get from them. You'll acquire so much stuff over your year.

A note on the pots and pans (etc.) that are supplied to you by housing...if the stuff is to disgusting to use, take it to the office and see if they will replace it. We had almost all of our stuff replaced over the year...including the couch, table, carpet, kitchen and bathroom floors!!! HA! We were supposed to get painted too, but we bitched a lot and they didn't do it. If you don't ask, you don't get. Your rent has to go to SOMETHING!

That's part of it, I suspect. Every time one my my housemates was terminated, we received a letter advising us of this, and instructing us to leave the bed clear and not use it as a double-bed as someone new could arrive at any time...

Word on the street is most (if not all) of the Commons couches have been replaced recently. Good thing too -- they were really comfy to nap on but you didn't want to think about what might be on them!

Do they tend to put the ICP people into bare apartments together and as we are only there for a few months get supplied with sme more stuff?
I expect most of this stuff is aimed at the lucky ducks goin out to spend a whole year there?

ICPs are in apartments together. But they're no different to any other apartment (although at a different complex to Cultural Reps).
