I know this may sound stupid since I have already been hired, but what am I actually going to be doing while working in Food and Beverage in Canada. I know there are carts with food and drinks, and a resteraunt. But will I just be serving food, or will I actually have to make it. Also, what's the likelyhood of getting into the restraunt? And what do you actually do in there. Basically, I am looking for a detailed job description of what I will be doing. Will it be like working at McDonald's ,where your worked to the bone and hate it and are always tired and you smell really bad. Thanks in advance, Brad
hey brad, i'm sure someone from the canadian pavillion past or present will be able to help you more, but i'll be doing F&B in the UK. i know you work from the outside carts into the restaurant and serving and you have to take a test to get to a higher position but hopefully someone will clarify for you what date do you head out? xxx
Hey...hopefully Diana will read this, she did F&B. I did Merch, but I might be able to give you a couple hints from when I was there. Outside you work on the popcorn cart. You make the popcorn and serve it and sell drinks (bottled). They sold beer there too, but not sure if they still do...all you'd have to do is pour it. Not sure what they're doing with Trapper Bob's these days...it was Beavertails still when I left. In the restaurant, you'll be a greeter and a seater. You could possibly train as an assignor. Then you'll be a food runner...you carry plates. Then a server. You don't have to cook any food (except popcorn and pouring drinks), just carry it. Someone else help...I tried for a Merchie!! Shan
Sara: I will be starting on December 8th and I can't wait. Thanks for your help guys, I feel better since I didn't want to have to slave away in a hot kitchen all day. Brad
Hey Brad! I'll be starting in Canadian F & B on June 14th so I'll let you know once I start what kinds of things we have to do. See you in December! Chelsea
Hey Shan, what sort of things did you do in merch? Did you get to do Kidcot at all? and what about the canadian movie, who works that? do they take merch people to be there? Sorry to change the subject from F&B to merch, but it seemed like a good place to ask. Lisa
Hey! I left last August, so I'm not sure how much has changed with the closing of the Boutique, but I'll tell you what I know. Merch staff covers - the Trading Post (which had two registers) - the Cart (which also had two positions, the cart register and the engraver for the leather bracelets) - used to cover the Boutique (which is where Kidcot was, but now I hear it's in the Post) - Kidcot(usually only one CM, but when it was busy there would be two) - Attraction (you were usually alone in what we referred to as "the hole", but sometimes when it was busy and they had an extra body, there was an attraction greeter) - Glow (we have a cart that comes out around 6ish and sells all the light up toys...HORRIBLE!!!) - usually throughout the day there will be some tasks assigned..."stock, clean post", "stock, clean cart", "prepare kidcot supplies", etc. To get your assignment, you sign in to a computer and it prints you out a little slip of paper that tells you where to go. It will either be to pick up a position (like at the start of a day, or when they have enough staff to have two people on kidcot), or it could be someone's break (in which case, you'll go to their position and the slip will have their break times on it)...or...it could be what is called a "Rotation Bump". A bump is the wonderful thing that gets you out of the heat of the cart, or out of kidcot hell. It shuffles around everyones positions. So, for example, the first position on the bump might be trading post 101, so you go to that position and whoever is in that position, will go to the next one and so on and so on until the last person, who signs into the computer again. Confusing, but you'll figure it out. As for Kidcot, all Merch castmembers do Kidcot. It can be a nice break, but it can be crazy busy. You are supposed to spend your downtime there making up new supplies so you're ready for the busy time. As for the attraction...when I first got there, any merchie could do the attraction...but...it changed part way through my year. They decided that since cm's in the attraction were technically "Cross-training" in merchandise and attractions, they had to follow the cross-training rules, which meant that those cm's had to be guaranteed 38 hours a week. So, based on seniority, when you picked your days off, you had to pick if you wanted to be an attraction cm or not. The benefit was 38 hours a week guaranteed. Downside...sometimes getting stuck in a rotation and spending ALL day down in the hole. I was high enough in seniority that I had the option, but I decided against it. I didn't mind the attraction, but spending ALL day down there by yourself wasn't really fun...and it was cold down there in the winter...although it was wicked when it was 90 degrees outside!!! I just decided that it wasn't worth the grief for the extra couple of hours. I didn't want to spend my last few months, miserable in the hole. Everyone that was there hated it...because it there were only two or three attractions people on in a day, you could easily get stuck there. Occasionally, after a break or whatever, they might escape and get to work in a store for a bit, but would eventually get bumped back down there. Anyways, I can't imagine what it's like there now. They've made so many changes since I was there. Days can get boring, but it's how you make it. I did lots of magic moments and made up little games to play with guests. This is getting out of control...if you have any more Q's...email me! shannybanany@hotmail.com Shan
Merch and Attractions is actually about to be split up. Starting May 22, merch will be just merchandise, so working the Wood Cart, and the Trading Post. Attractions people will include the attraction (we'll always have a greeter) and Kidcot. Most of us aren't too pleased about the split, but what can ya do. And some other updates for ya Shan, Trapper Bob's is completely unused now. When I got there in December they were selling ice wine from it I believe, but they closed it down completely soon after. And, to all of our delight, we no longer do Glow! And Shan, I'd love to hear some of the games you played with the kids, feel free to PM them to me anytime!
No more GLOW!?!?!?!? How jealous am I?????!!!? That was the worst. Unless you had it during Off Kilter time, so I would strategically place myself near the popcorn cart where I could watch the show...or go to the UK to talk to my friends that were outside over there! That will be very interesting with things split. How many people are going to have to go to the dark side permanently?? I wonder how long it will last because it was split before I got there and about 4 months before my arrival they joined up. I hope the Cart Tart gets to stay on the Merch side!! I'll try to think up some things that I did and msg you. Ask Mgr. Kim about all my stupid hotel delivery things...I did some crazy things that took a loooonnnnngggg time. Most of the other things we did were very very very bad show...but fun. Is the time capsule still going?? Shan
