Hey I've read a few threads on here about mobile (cell) phones and was wondering how many of u r going to get a USA sim card or just buy a phone out there? Any recommendations? Thanks for helping! Cat
hey! i was thinking of just taking my current phone and buying an american sim card but i don't know know how easy that is to do. Was thinking you could probably buy them in walmart cause you can get absolutely anything in there!! Elainexx
US SIM cards are relatively difficult to get hold of in retail outlets. I found the easiest way to do so was ebay. Incidentally, you'll need to ensure that your phone is SIM-unlocked if you're going down this route - will require a call, and quite likely a payment, to your network operator.
I purchased a Sim card from http://www.fonepool.com for use on T-Mobile, received it yesterday! I also had my Nokia Sim unlocked at http://www.bilemo.com/ for free Be sure you have a Tri-Band phone (except canadians) else you won't pick up the signal over there Colin
Ya, if you email fonepool and tell them your model of mobile, they will tell you if it is possible. Mine isn't so I'll probably buy a cheap pay as you go from Walmart, or maybe a fonepool one.
Cool, thanks guys! Emailed fonepool and my fone will work over there so think I will buy a sim-pack from them Cat
i think there are some places with better rates than fonepool and its really cheap to get unlocked phones on ebay
if anyone did happen to order from fonepool it would be really nice of you to put my email address down as referring you We both get extra credit for it Email is colin.reynolds@btinternet.com Don't feel obliged at all, just a thought hehe Colin
I just got one from fonepool.com too... Students in my university get $10 extra credit, so it ended up costing $10 for the simcard with a total of $40 credit! In other words, I'm happy with it! KC
I've read a thread here about the phones in the apartments... free calls to WDW apartments and we can phone local Orlando and receive calls from home? I'm now doubting whether I need to take my mobile phone at all... Any suggestions? Cat
I didn't have a mobile when I was out there (2003 - 2004) but noone really did. A couple of folks had their phones from home but that was it. But it appears more folks have US sims now. I admit there were a few times where it would have been really helpful to have a mobile but I actually found it refreshing to be rid of it for a year. And not to have folks texting away all the time. :-\ Having said that, if I get back out there, I'll be taking my triband phone and getting a US sim myself. Ona x
US SIMs are the way forward - certainly beats using your UK phone too much. The last couple of weeks, my SIM-unlocked handset with the US SIM died and I had to resort to my UK phone. Wasn't a good idea. I'm not good, it seems, at tempering my use of the phone to reflect the higher charges. And ran up a stupidly high bill. Learn from my mistakes (then again I know I won't...everytime I go abroad I seem to run up a stupidly high phone bill).
When at sea I believe you have access to a phone on board, its at discounted rates. I don't know the rates (maybe someone does) but I saw on dcljobs.com that the option was there Colin
some cruiseships have rates as high as 15 dollars a minute so i hope there would be some heavy discounts!
