hellooo, i'm looking to do the cultural rep program when i finish my degree next year (2009), and was just hoping someone could help answer my questions...although at the mo there's not many

basically, i'm not sure whether to do food and beverage or merchandise (as there's no real attractions in the uk one as far as i recall), so i wanted to ask:
    1) as the rose and crown is a pub-style place and the yorkshire county fish shop is a chippy, are they tipped and if so what is the average you would recieve daily in tips?
    2) from people's experience (or from what you've heard), is it nicer/better to do the food and beverage or merchandise positions?

think that's it for now, thanks in advance for any help any of you can offer :)

    Hi!
    1) Yes you would be tipped in the Rose and Crown but you are not tipped until you move up to the server position. We were told at the interviews that it may take around 6 months to move up to this position. Before you are a server, you will show guests to their tables and take reservations. I don't think you'd get tipped at the chippy, as it seems more quick service food and beverage.

    2) From what I've heard, Merchandise have an easier job, BUT when you move up to server in Food & beverage, you get a lot more money than merchandise with the tips you earn!

I had Merchandise down as my first choice, and I was chosen to do Food and beverage. My boyfriend put down merch first and he was lucky enough to get it. I don't think it matters really because there's only 3 roles to choose from (food and beverage, merchandise, and the historical center).

    Good luck!

thanks for your response! so in the rose and crown before you become a server, and the chippy in general, do you get the lower wage? ta

No you start on the higher wage before you're a server, which is $7 something.. then when you move up to a tipped position as a server, your wage goes down to $3 something... but you'll be getting tips so you'll actually be earning more than you did originally.

What's the historical centre? I can't seem to find out much about it. Does anyone have any more information on that sort of role?

I worked in F&B and had a friend who worked in merch

F&B is more stressful but you get more guest interaction which is really good and the time goes quicker

Merch is alot slower and not as stressful and dont get asmany guests coming into your store

If you look up the Crown and Crest in the UK pavillion, that is the Historical Research Center. It's basically looking up people's last names and showing them their family crest.
