You arrive (naturally), get picked up at the airport, and driven to your housing complex. There you are assigned your apt. number. Usually the next day you will attend a presentation, sign a bunch of forms etc. You continue this the next day, but also go to apply for your social security number. You are taken there by bus. Then you attend an 8-hour(that's how long it lasted when I attended it) class at the Disney university called Traditions. Then the next day you'll be trained in your role. I was gonna work merchandise, so I took a class called Merchantainment at the Disney U. It lasted for about 4/5 hours. Not all roles require a class like this. Then you have Discovery Day, which is basically one day of walking around the park you are going to work at. i can't remember if you get a day off during these days or not. When I arrived it was hurricane season, and one of the worst they had had in ages, so stuff was canceled during my week. The order of these three last classes/events aren't necessarily in this order. But the first two days are always the same. After this week of classes, training and presentations you start your job.
After the first week, are you trained on the job? I mean, in your location, do they still train you when you get there? Also.. I'm arriving a few days before my start date, do I just drive to the Commons and get my apt number on my start date? Where are you supposed to go?
You usually have three days of on-the-job training, when you have a trainer teaching you everything about your area while doind you "other job". I don't know if you can check in to your housing complex before you're supposed to. I actually doubt it. The person who's bed you'l be getting has to move out first, and they have to clean the place and make it all ready for your arrival. So I would advise you to call them waaaay ahead of time, to see if you can make some special arrangements.
Sorry, I didn't mean that I'd be going to the Commons earlier. I'm going to be staying at a Disney hotel before my start date, I was just wondering on the day of my start date, do I just turn up at the Commons? I wouldn't be sure where to go. ???
Briar Rose, We are from Canada and my son drove down to start his program (CRP). When they found out he was not flying they called him at home before he left and provided him with a contact number and got his cell phone number as well. He arrived a few days early and was in contact with them. At this time they told him which complex he had a bed in and what time to show up at the complex on his start date. Maybe Yummy can give you more advice about who you should contact and I'm not even sure if things would work the same for you but I imagine it will if you arrive early and are staying fairly close to the complexes and not the airports.
When I spoke with Kristen from Yummy she told me something similar to what Mom-eh said. Kristen mentioned that in my package there would be an e-mail to contact with how I'm arriving in Florida. A couple days before I leave for Florida I need to e-mail Disney and they'll tell me when/where to meet them! I assume that I'll just be going to the complex I move into... but we'll see! I head down for a start date of July 15th, so I can definitely let you know how everything works once I'm settled in.
Traditions is only a few hours long now, its pretty much a Disney brain-washing experience though, so you might want to zone out during it. They dont give you long to settle in, maybe an evening or so before they overload you with rules and regulations. It usually gets fun after that though, so dont worry.
Traditions was excellent fun. I had the two greatest facilitators ever, they made the whole thing into sort of a standup act. I'm also a Disney freak, so very interested in the history and traditions of the company, which naturally made it more barable. It actualy ised to be a three day event.. that would've been cool to attend.
hehe, I remember we had Traditions the day after St. Patty's day, so we were pretty reduced by that... It's actually amazing how we all managed to get up so early, as we had to be at Disney University by 8 am I had a blast tho, and I got a little Minnie Mouse This is also the day you get your NAME TAG ...hopefully with your name spelled right, hehe ...and you also get the schedule for your first week at work!
yeh the reason i asked was for car hire really. I wont have much with me when i arrive i.e bed stuff and food! So i figured i might hire a car for the first week just to get settled. Do you think this is a good idea?
I'm really excited for Traditions... it sounds fun! I'm not sure if you'd want to rent a car. I heard that there is a bus that goes to Walmart, and usually all of the people who just moved in do a day trip there sometime during that week. Also, you may make friends with someone with a car! Then you wouldn't need to rent one Worst case scenario, I'm sure your new roommates would be able to help you get the stuff you need to survive the first week!
I wouldn't rent a car the first week. It's only the shopping you need it for! Best advice is to take the bus there and then a taxi back, because you get a lot of stuff on the first trip to wallmart. It's about $10 one way with taxi, and you'll probably not go alone there, so you'll be splitting the bill...
yeah, renting a car is a huge waste of money, unless you're gonna use it very wisely. Going to walmart is about the only thing you'll have time to do your first week, so no need for a car. Have Kojak take you. He has room for loads of groceries, and peerty cheap.
