Hey guys! Okay, I have just been told about the tax options for the year, and am I right in understanding that we can either sign up to an online thing and sort it before we go, or do it once we get back? http://www.yummyjobs.com/taxback Anyone who has been or is out there at the moment have any advice?! Also informing the student loans company, I've sent off a form, think that's all we have to do? Cheers! xx
Hey, don't worry about tax at the moment, when your over there you pay normal American tax on what you earn and at the end of the American finanical year (December) you can claim it back, you could use taxback but there are people who come to the housing complex and they do it all for you!!! They work for an American company called American tax shoppe, they rake 70 bucks from you to do it but they are great!! You then apply for the rest if your tax back after you finish you program and I did that by simply emailing my paperwork to them and they then sent me a lovely cheque!!!! You don't get 100% of your tax back but you get around about 85% back so not too bad!! And if your out of the UK for a year you may also get a tax rebate when u come home (I did!!) happy days!!!!!
thank you!! this is great info, do you know if it's the same deal with canadians?? my momma has been hassling me about tax questions for when i go and i just figure they'll go through everything when i get there. all i know is when i get back, i have to keep all my american tax information for LIFE because they can ask about it at any time (which happened to, interestingly enough, the woman who does my families taxes husband some 30-odd years after he had worked in the states!)
im not 100% sure about canadians but id imagine it works the same for you guys, cant see why not!!!! they give you loads of info about it all while your at disney anyway, they have people there at the housing complex for about 2 or 3 weeks on a drop in basis so you just go along with your paperwork and they help you fill in the forms etc and then a few weeks later you get a cheque through the mail!!!
If you're in the UK, and you've been working, you can claim any tax back *if* you haven't earnt over the tax limit. You have to wait until you get your P45 (leaving a job), but the form you fill in is a P85. It basically tells the UK tax office that you're leaving the country, and for how long. They'll then work out how much tax they should give back to you, and send a cheque. You can also ask for the cheque to go to someone else, so my boyfriend will be receiving mine on my behalf. In short - when leaving the UK, fill in a P85 form to claim back your tax. NB, this probably doesn't apply to people leaving in April - you'll have barely worked the new tax year.
i used turbotax for my tax both while you in the states and when back in the uk - its completely free and a lot of people used it without any problems
when leaving the UK make sure you fill in the P85. I had no idea about that and have just spent two years arguing with HMRC over what forms to fill out and what I was doing. i had to involve my local MP to get anywhere with them. Though it's mainly cos HMRC are evil and useless but it took forever for me to get any money back from them. There's also the P86 that you fill in for them when you return.
If you google P85 it will come up with the form, its a PDF file and the first link, print it off and fill in then send it back... Only problem is I don't have a permanent address in the UK and I will not be getting my p45 until the end of the month... Any suggestions?
Get someone else to fill it in for you. Look through the form, fill in the bits you can without your P45, make sure you sign it, then get parents or other half or someone (whoever will recieve your P45) to fill in the remainder once the P45 comes through. I only had 3 days between my last day of work and flying out here, so my P45 didn't turn up until after I was in Florida. I signed the P85 form before I went and my boyfriend filled in the rest once my P45 turned up.
