Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me. Im taking my laptop over with me and im not good at understanding internet connections etc except wireless as thats easy, but is there anything extra i'd need to take with me or get to get connected in my Apt? Thank you Sam xx
You will need an in internet network cable which you can get from any computer store. They are all the same so just ask someone at the store and they can get you one. I don't know how much they are though as I used the one we had at home before we got wireless.
I am bringing my laptop over as well, I was wondering though if it is safe security wise? With roomates and sharing rooms and whatnot...has there been problems in the past?
I haven't noticed any, but if you have an open wireless network it must be possible. Basically you get a (rather slow) internet connection as standard, a router with (I think) 4 sockets for network cables in the living room, just connect the cables, wait 10 secs and off you go. If you want you (and your housemates) could buy a wireless router - you can choose if you want it to be an open network or secure so others can't access it. You may be able to use wireless from nearby appartements if their's isn't password protected. You can also upgrade your connection speed for a fee - I'm not sure how much, and split it with your flatmates. If you're lucky nearby open networks from other appartements may have upgraded theirs so you can get a faster speed, but obviously with open networks you're prone to potential attack. Certainly well worth bringing a laptop, as going to the disney learning center pc's can be a hassle, they close at night and you may have to wait for a pc if they're full.
When i go next July i intend to either buy a laptop before i go or get one once i arrive as it will be cheaper. Before i do, i need to sell my desktop computer to fund the laptop
If i get accepted then i hope to take my laptop but i think i will just take a cable with me, hehe. Is it safe to take your laptop over if your from the UK.
Now that i've been accepted i'll definately be buying and taking a laptop, I haven't the first clue about laptops, i've always been so used to desktops and just haven't had the need for one. I take lots of photos, and i have a lot of music so i'll need one with sufficient memory.. deary me.
I'm an avid Mac owner so i'll be going to get the new Macbooks. They are certinly not cheap but the can last a good 1o years unlike Windows XP/ Vista based laptops. Also, Macs are great for those who like editing phot's and video. The americans love the macs and everyone who goes to University usually has one
i love macs but ive got a sony vaio. And i love it. It has a 200GB hard drive so i have plenty of room for the photos i would plan on taking, i will need to get my digital camera back in use.
My plan was also to get a new Digital Camera and a cheap Camcorder. I was to remember this forever and do some video blogs for everyone at home to watch
I love my digital camera but i dont get to use it much, hehe. i hope the battery is still in good condition. I think ill take a webcam and do video diaries, but ive got my own blog started so i will need my laptop for updating that.
Do you reckon it might be cheaper to buy technological stuff out there? it might be cheaper but if anything goes wrong with it when you go back home you might be a bit screwed, I'm not sure what to do for the best.
Apparently dependant on what you want, the cheapest place to buy most of these electrical items are actually at the airport. Becuase of the current poor ecomony, we wouldn't be getting a huge saving over the UK prices. However at the airport your not paying the 17.5% sales Tax which can be a heft saving. I'm going to look into this alot more becuase i would rather buy my apple laptop in the US as their warreny's cover you world wide
ah im so underprepared, ill need to buy a laptop a digital camera and a video camera! i love the really cute week video cameras you can get out there that you basically plug straight into your comp and upload through a USB stick type thing, well smart and i kinda remember reasonably cheap!...i might just buy it all out there tbh and go for the reasonable exchange rate (if its still good) xxx
haha me too, my laptop is far too broken to even bother taking over. I need to figure out if i should get one here or over there though .
i brought and old laptop with me with the idea of get a new here (im looking for a mac, and we have discount!!!), just to be in touch at home, cuz if not, sometimes i just go onbline like at 3 am to say im ok, cuz i dont have time! so if i havent had the computer with me i barely speak with mom!, i mean we have computers at commons and epcot... but there so many things to do! so i def recommend bring it
I took my laptop with the first time...and it worked fine. It broke when I got back LOL! It was old though.
