How many suitcases can we take if we're there for a year???

it depends on your airline. some will be 2 cases at 23KG and 1 piece hand luggage... others might be less but with the option of buying extra weight in advance (flyglobespan do that).

Its the same as if your going for 1 month! The fact were goin for a year doesn't affect the flight, because for all they know we could be going for 2 weeks, haha..

But yeah, if you wana take more stuff you can just buy it! I think its usually about £25 for an extra bit of weight!

I took two huge suitcases, one hand luggage and one personal item (laptop)

I was the only one out of my flight group that had two suitcases, i must have been quite comical dragging it all round Chicago when we changed flights :)

Check your airline. I managed to get back without paying any extra as well :p

I want to take a laptop, but I don't have one at the moment.
How much is it for a proper cheap laptop? Like a pure basic one?

it'll be cheaper over there, plus you wouldn't have to worry about adaptor. but you could get a cheap one here for about 300 i think.. but it would be 300 dollars over there...

I just bought a new laptop...and it was about $500 Canadian...so just a little bit less in American dollars...if you want to buy a used laptop, which you can easily find...I'd say it would be about $400

I took two suitcases, my laptop and one other bag...however from the UK you can't do that anymore and your laptop must be included as part of your one bag for the cabin.

We went with United Airlines and I think we were allowed about 23kg each...and if I can fit all my stuff in two suitcases and still have weight to spare (if not room!) then anyone can do it. If/when I go next time I'm certainly not taking all the stuff I did! (but the duvet will still be going :p hehe).

Just bear in mind how much stuff you will buy when you're there. Granted, it depends on how long you go for, but I was there for 11 months and came home with 7 suitcases (ok so my Mum and brother were there at the time, so technically about 3 of those suitcases didn't hold stuff that was mine) and shipped three small boxes. However we flew home with Virgin Atlantic and were allowed 32kg per suitcase. Obviously I have to pay for the 7th suitcase (which didn't turn up at Gatwick with the rest anyway...they forgot to put it on the plane  ::) even though we had paid for it) and it was about $115...but obviously it depends on the airline.

I'm not sure it is for economy...we flew Premium so we got more.

    I love VA

Virgin economy to and from the US is two cases of 23kg though, not just once.

Just so there's no confusion, here is what you can take on a VA Economy flight (as copied/pasted from virginatlantic.co.uk):

"Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 23kg (51lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in)."

To clear up the dimensions thing, you must add the WIDTH, the DEPTH and the HEIGHT together. If the total is less than 158cm then you are fine.

Here's a link just so everything's extra clear:

By the way, anyone flying Virgin should sign up to the Virgin Flying Club. It's free, and they give away lots of free miles which help get free flights!

If you send me (or disneygibbs!) a PM with your e-mail, and we send you a link to refer you to it, you and me or Lou would also get extra miles, if you'll excuse the cheekiness - it does help you as well!!

And if you can't excuse the cheekiness - well you can sign up at the Virgin website!

    haha that reminds me

we flew with virgin a lot wheni was younger and i was a member of the frequent virgin club. i still have my frequent virgin shirt and membership card - what a way to kill ur social life - wearing the frequent virgin shirt out in public!!!

LOL. Lou, I'm not miles obsessed - I just think everyone should get as much free stuff as they possibly can!

I also have a Frequent Virgins Shirt - and can guarantee that it is never worn in public!

Anyhow, the Flying Club free stuff is *much* better than the Frequent Virgins free stuff...free flights :D
