    Hi Nat!
I did my exchange year in New York state... It was the best year of my life - id definately recommend it!
I think people do sometimes organise their own exchanges - theres bound to be an american who wants to come over!... But most unis have some exchange partners and thats the easiest way to do it.
Hope you get to study abroad,
    Marie

Yeah Tinkerbell it was awesome, i was in a city a few hours from NYC but i went their about 15 times - so i know it pretty well! Also travelled all across America.

Fingers crossed your uni has an exchange you can go on.
The only problem you may have if you want to go this year is that most US unis start back at the end of August so with doing the college program you may not have time to get the new visa. Maybe you could go in January like Feeona is.

Hope it works out for you,
    Marie

    Hey Nat.

    Studying abroad is easy.
U just have to look for scholarships or opportunities
    at ur College/University.
And then just fill tons on papers.
There are many good choices in the States.

As for me, I studied in Canada for 6 months
There is a special "Study Abroad" department
    at my ex-High School.
It was nice, there were requierements
such as 100% English and 85 in average.

    So dont worry
    Just keep looking!!!
Thats the only way to come across and opportunity.
There ar enot hard to find.

    See ya
    Robb ;D

    Hey Nat
I am kind of new to the board so am late replying to your post but I just thought that I would add that I am actually in the USA studying at them moment. I was here for a semester in Spring 2004 and i had such a great time that I have returned for another semester!!!!! :) It is definately the best thing that I have ever done and I have made the most amazing friends!!! its a totally different experience from studying in the UK as well....im still trying to get used to dry campuses!!! haahaha!!!
You should definately see your uni/college about their study abroad programs but if youve got any questions i'll try my best to help you!!

shell when you say dry campuses what do u mean? do u mean freem from alcohol of that theyre dry because it hasnt rained?

By the way which part of the us are you in and what would you say is the best thing about the exchange.

I will be studying in knoxville tennessee for a semester from jan 2006

are there any other differences in terms of social life and the academics between your experience of american uni and uk uni?

Hi Shell! Welcome to the site... u lucky thing out there right now! I loved my year abroad - best year of my life...

    Feeona,
From my experience on my year the best thing was really experiencing the american way of life!

the main differences in classes was less exams. It varies but mine was loads of group work, class participation, constant assessment. More like school. I found the classes quite easy too. I guess it depends what your course is but most americans dont pick their major till second/third year. So you kindof have a head start...

In terms of social life... theres more eating out especially when not everyones over 21... Thers loads more stuff on, on campus - such as movies, bowling etc...
Also for those who dont have fake ids... nights out tend to be at frat parties where u drink watery beer and punch...

    Hi everybody!!!!

I think I am gonna have to agree with Marie on this one the best thing about my exchange has really just been getting to spend time in America!! I have made some amazing friends too which was one of thie things that prompted me to come back this year. I am studying in a very very small college in Bridgewater, Virginia theres only about 1200 students in total so everyones really friendly!! The big adjustment for me has been dry campuses which means there is no alcohol allowed at all even if you are over 21!! This does vary between schools but since this is a religious area it applies here.

Most socialising is done on campus too but theres loads more fun stuff to do than back home especially if you make friends with football players or you are on a sports team yourself (?) which means you get access to lots of cheap watery beer.

I actually enjoy my classes more here too. I am in my final semester of an American studies degree at the moment but I agree with Marie it is more llike school and they are really strict on attendance. You need to be prepared to participate lots but lecturers are more open and especially now im in my final year a lot of my classes are small and depend entirely on discussion.

I hope this has helped guys, feel free to ask anything and I will try my best to help. You will have an amazing time if you head over here to study!! I hope I have just as much fun at disney!

Wow sounds great, i cannot wait to go, but first ive got disney hehe.

I think its a shame that uni in the uk centres so much around alohol, sure i love to do out and get drunk and i defintately do it too often. But i also like the theatre, cinema, eating out, bowling, going to comedy evenings, watching sport but my friends would never consider doing any of that, its as if because they are student the only thing they should be doing is clubbing.

It is strange our culture sometimes.

Feeona you're gonna love it and disney!

Shell - you are so lucky getting to go back a second time... I know what u mean about classes... its nice theyre small u get more involved and everyone gets to know everyone. Are you going to apply to disney?

My campus wasnt a dry campus but there was no bar... If u like watching sport Feeona you'll love american uni... Me and my friends used to go watch basketball all the time... We'd go to the movies, go out for dinner, go to events on campus and hit the bars cos i was 21! I had the best of all worlds...

Feeona you are definately going to have the best time. Unis here put on lots more activities for their students and you should join lots of clubs and stuff!! they love english people so you will settle in really quick!!

Marie- I am really lucky to be back it was kind of unexpected especially since its my final semester and stuff!!! I have just finished applying for Disney and went to the London interviews in February...I got accepted so I will be heading to Disney on September 20th!!! So excited!!! ;D
