  2. Best thing is to do what most people do and buy a phone from walmart on your first night. You can get a really cheap tracfone for like $15, the phone is not that good, but it does the job. Its what most people get out there.

    Yeh... that aint cheap

Walmart phones - Net10 ahoy! I think my phone was $15 and it came with $15 credit alreay on it. Plus everyone has it - wouldn't be a same disney experience without the crappy net10 phone you know

T-mobile sell sim cards for a few dollars, I'll take the handset I got over here. Done!

Yeah I got a Nokia for $40 when I was there...that was the one our entire arrival group bought and I think everyone I knew on the college program had one!

I'm taking mine on holiday in December to see if it still works...I hope so as it should still have credit on it!

Take your phones. Don't know how it works where you're from, but here phones are automatically unlocked after a year.
So that's what I did, just brought my phone, and bought a sim card. You can get one at t-mobile for like $15, including 5 minutes or something like that.
Or you could check out AT&T or Verizon, they also have cheap prepaid phone deals.

  10. I just got a prepaid net10 phone for $15 it did me fine and we all had it! However if I get on the graduate programme then I think I may get a cheap contract phone over there which will also make it easier to contact people in America as I can text them. Don't know how it will work paying for it though.

also, if you plane on using your phone a lot and calling home a lot, get a plan. With prepaid it costs a shitload to call international. If you get a plan, you pay like $5 extra a month, and you can call home really cheap. This goes for most of the phone companies.

okay, so the blondness is coming out. what is this about unlocking phones etc? i was under the impression all you do is take your phone with you to orlando and get a simcard there. and you are ready to go?

any info on this would be greatly appreciated. my gf is flying tommorrow to start the programme and im only coming to join her in march :'( and i would really like for us to stay in touch via phone aswell. (email is a given). in SA we've got a instant messaging service called mxit. it's downloadable internationaly. and all you need is a phone that has gprs capability. do the cheapy phones you guys are talking about have gprs? if she can get a phone with gprs for cheap there i think we will be okay. cos it's a LOT cheaper to just i.m most of the time.

    thanks

I doubt very much that a $20 phone would have GPRS. Unlocking a phone is that your handset is set to only work with the network who have been your provider so you have to take it to a store to have that restriction lifted. For example my LG phone which is on T-Mobile here in the UK would need to be unblocked even to use T-Mobile in the US!

thanks for the rundown man! what do you suggest she must do? i dont even know which networks are in the us......

For some bizarre reason, they're behind the times with handsets in the US & always have been. So you're best off getting a decent handset & taking it with you. Then pick whatever network you want (there is also AT&T, Verizon & Virgin mobile) The only issue you may find there is whether a pay as you go contract would support GPRS roaming...it should do but make sure your lady checks it out before making a purchase.

Pay as you go sim cards only cost a few dollars so it's hardly a huge loss if they don't though! Hope that helps bro!

It cost 20c a minute with a Virgin Mobile prepaid phone, the same as local calls, though you could buy minute packs (min $20) to reduce that to 10c which lasted a month. Though its not a bad rate, I'd expect that to be beaten elsewhere. Consider Skype if you're happy to make calls using your computer. Using VOIP you can make free international calls to other computers with the free software, or cut price calls to phones with a number, plus you have video, so you can see each other, though sound quality isn't perfect, and picture will be jumpy. Worth considering for regular contact home (you'd need some type of microphone and speakers (e.g. headset) or computer phone though.)

  20. Some pre-paid phones don't let you phone internationally either. I couldn't get my Net10 phone to phone home so I had to either use my mobile or get my mum to phone the apartment phone. Both were expensive. It's why I am considering a contract phone as if you get the right plan then it will be a lot cheaper for me to phone home and then America when I am back Britain.
