    May 17th is Norway's birthday, so let's wave our flags high in the sky and sing:

    Ja, vi elsker dette landet
    som det stiger frem........

    Oh yeah,
    it means (roughly translated):

    Yes, we love this country
    as it rises forward

    sounds pretty stupid in english though....

    Most Norwegian songs sound stupid in English... And its not Norway's b-day, but Constitution Day! :p We hadn't got rid of the Danish ppl by 1814, remember? That was in 1905... 100 years ago! Yay!

    Well, excuse me, MyLittlePony

    In that case, June 7th isn't Norways b-day either, it's our independance day. Our b-day would be sometime a thousand years ago, since that was when the norway as we know it today was born

    Today's the day! Our Constitution Day is here! If I go downtown now, there'll be chaos. And the royal family stands outside waving for 3+ hours ;D

    Hipp hipp, hurra!
    Hipp hipp, hurra!
    Hipp hipp, hurra!

    Hey, I almost understood it: :D
    The words "Ja", "vir", "landet" and "stiger" sound almost German, and the rest seems a little like English, doesn´t it?
    Our languages are really related to each other. That´s so cool. ;D

    Here's our entire national anthem. Most Norwegians only know the first verse by heart, I know number 1 and 7. ;D Just thought it fitting for the day, I had enough time to translate it... A lot of it may not be understandable, but, then again, I don't understand a lot of it myself. If any Norwegians have corrections, feel free to post them, as I did this on a whim...

    Ja, vi elsker dette landet, Yes, we love this country
    som det stiger frem, as it rises forth
    furet, værbitt over vannet, piney , weathered over the water
    med de tusen hjem. with the thousand homes
    Elsker, elsker det og tenker Love, love it and think
    på vår far og mor of our father and mother
    og den saganatt som senker and the fairytalenight that lowers
    drømme på vår jord. the dreams to our earth.
    Og den saganatt som senker, And the fairytale night that lowers,
    senker drømme på vår jord. lowers the dreams to our earth.

    Dette landet Harald berget This country Harald saved
    med sin kjemperad, with his giant row,
    dette landet HÃ¥kon verget this country HÃ¥kon guarded
    medens Øyvind kvad; while Øyvind sang;
    Olav på det landet malte Olav on this country painted
    korset med sitt blod, the cross with his blood,
    fra dets høye Sverre talte from its height Sverre spoke
    Roma midt imot. directly against Rome.

    Bønder sine økser brynte Farmers sharpened their axes
    hvor en hær dro frem, where an army went forth,
    Tordenskiold langs kysten lynte, Tordenskiold made lightning along the coast,
    så den lystes hjem. so they could see their way home.
    Kvinner selv stod opp og strede Women rose up and went forth
    som de vare menn; as if they were men;
    andre kunne bare grede, others could only grieve,
    men det kom igjen! but it came again!

    Visstnok var vi ikke mange, Certainly we weren't many,
    men vi strakk dog til, but we were enough,
    da vi prøvdes noen gange, when we were tested some times,
    og det stod på spill; and we had to risk it;
    ti vi heller landet brente we would rather burn the country
    enn det kom til fall; than let it fall;
    husker bare hva som hendte remember only what happened
    ned på Fredrikshald! down at Fredrikshald!

    Hårde tider har vi døyet, Hard times we have lived through,
    ble til sist forstøtt; were eventually cast away;
    men i verste nød blåøyet but in worst despair blue-eyed
    frihet ble oss født. freedom was born to us.
    Det gav faderkraft å bære It gave fatherstrength to carry
    hungersnød og krig, starvation and war,
    det gav døden selv sin ære – it gave death itself its glory -
    og det gav forlik. and it gave agreement.

    Fienden sitt våpen kastet, The enemy threw away his weapon,
    opp visiret for, the vizir flew up,
    vi med undren mot ham hastet, wondering we ran towards him,
    ti han var vår bror. until he became our brother.
    Drevne frem på stand av skammen Driven forth by the shame
    gikk vi søderpå; we went to the south;
    nu vi står tre brødre sammen, 3 brothers stand together now,
    og skal sådan stå! and will continue standing like that!

    Norske mann i hus og hytte, Norwegian man in house and hut,
    takk din store Gud! thank your big God!
    Landet ville han beskytte, He wanted to protect the country,
    skjønt det mørkt så ut. even though it looked dark.
    Alt hva fedrene har kjempet, All of what the fathers have fought,
    mødrene har grett, the mothers have cried,
    har den Herre stille lempet has the Lord quietly seen it through
    så vi vant vår rett. so we won our part.

    Ja, vi elsker dette landet, Yes, we love this country,
    som det stiger frem, as it rises forth,
    furet, værbitt over vannet, piney, weathered over the water,
    med de tusen hjem. with the thousand homes.
    Og som fedres kamp har hevet And as the fathers battle has raised
    det av nød til seir, what of despair to victory,
    også vi, når det blir krevet, also we, when is demanded,
    for dets fred slår leir. for its peace camp here.

    OK, I'm stupid... Here's the OFFICIAL translation...

    Yes, we love with fond devotion
    This our land that looms
    Rugged, storm-scared o'er the ocean,
    With her thousand homes.
    Love her, in our love recalling
    Those who gave us birth.
    And old tales which night, in falling
    Bring as dreams to earth.
    And old tales which night, in falling
    Bring as dreams, as dreams to earth.
    Norse man, whatsoe'er thy station,
    Thank thy God, Whose power
    Willed and wrought the land's salvation
    In her darkest hour.
    All our mothers sought with weeping
    And our sires in fight,
    God has fashioned, in His keeping
    Till we gained our right.
    God has fashioned, in His keeping
    Till we gained, we gained our right.
    Yes, we love with fond devotion
    This our land that looms
    Rugged, storm-scared o'er the ocean,
    With her thousand homes.
    And, as warrior sires have made her
    Wealth and fame increase,
    At the call we too will aid her,
    Armed to guard her peace.
    At the call we too will aid her,
    Armed to guard, to guard her peace.
