I was just looking at my friends' wedding information on The Knot.com, and the attire for the ceremony is "Highland Formal." What is highland formal and is there an Americanized version?

my mate from Inverness had to go to a wedding lately wearing the full kit, kilt and all! but it cost him like over £1000 so doubt they'd expect everyone to do the kilt thing!

Yeah Highland formal is full kilt etc. like this

But as was said, there's no way that all guests are expected to be in highland formal. Generally it's only if you already have a kilt or feel like splashing out, that you'd wear one. Otherwise just general formal wedding wear is def. appropriate.
