What is everyone going to do about phones in the states?? Do we have phones in the apartments and if so do we have to pay? Or is it worth either buying a mobile or living on the good old phone cards they have out there???
Hey I'm going to see if i can get a mobile that has international deals on it, as long as i can find one that lets me text the Uk for standard price and receive them for free then i'll be pleaesed! will get an old fashioned fone card thing though for the occassional call! hehe. Bry
hey chicken well i been looking into this yeah we get a landline in the apartments with all local numbers being free as well as apartment 2 apartment within th commons etc i'm taking my mobile with me to receive messages then im strongly considering buying a virgin mobile usa phone to send texts etc as they 10 cents a go, calls are cheap just for use incase you're out loose people etc, they r pretty cheap xxx
Hey Anna ! It is Emily, we leave on the same day, remember ?... To answer your questions, I have read that there are phones in the apartments, and it is free for local calls. I don't know if I will buy a cell phone out there ; but i'm taking my own cell phone and maybe I could get a cheap "sim card". And I will also buy the good old phone cards, lol, I think some of them are worthwhile... See you soon Anna.
Hi Emily - its not long now is it - a week today Sounds like everyone has the same idea, I'm going to look at buying a moblie out there hten - like Sara I was going to take mine to recieve messages but I know it costs loads to use them out there! Anna x
i know mate, grrr, i think its 30p to send a msg from the state, on my network it is anyway and im on virgin. virginmobileusa.com is a good site shows you the phones and prices of calls, my parents are gona call the apartment phone cos it only costs them 2p a minute from our home landline which is good! but otherwise i may buy a calling card, i mostly use texts anyway so i can see me buying one, i know with virgin you have to top up $20 every 3 months/every quarter hows everythin goin now hun with preparations etc? xxx
It'll cost to receive texts while we're "abroad" although i spose it'll be our new home! lol. I looked at t-mobile a while ago and i think they have some kind of imformation about international contracts. I can easily go through $20 a quarter! lol Bry
I'm definately getting a new phone when I get out there. Way too much hassle otherwise. And you can always sell it on to someone who has just arrived when you leave
I was wondering about all this too, my UK 02 contract finishes in June so was thinking of just cancelling it and picking up a Pay As You Go phone in US as i'm only there for three months....but then can people from home text abroad?? I don't really get it! I know one thing for sure, there is no way i'll be able to live without a phone for 3 months! x
claire yeah they can text abroad and you can text home as the uk prefix is +44 if they are texting to you or you are texting home, it comes up on most phones now when u receive a msg every countries prefix is different but thats the UK one! xxx
i think ill do that too - what i did discover when i was there a few weeks ago was a florida phone card, its not the standard ones with 120 mins for $6 etc it cost me $10 and had 3 hours worth of international calls so they are really good and cheap - they are bright green and i bought it from a texaco, (im sure u can get them other places to - but jus incase) ;D
yeah they r cheap, thats good. i mean even if u wana call off ur mobile u can use the calling cards but u have a mobile charge added to it. 30p a min or sumit! so yeah ill get the 3 hours for $10 lol! and a mobile im sorted xxxx
