So here's the deal. IF I get accepted for CRP 2012, my parents said they'll fly down with me to get me all set up. Has anyone ever done this before? I'm just wondering if my parents are even allowed to come check in with me and help me move in to the apartment. I'd be only 19 by that time and it would be the first time living away from my parents (sad, I know). Any help?
I know one girl whose parents flew down with her because she was young as well and they had a bit of a family vacation before, but then they dropped her off at Vista Way to check in herself. From Vista way you are driven to your apartment complex and taken to your room. Your parents could probably do all this with you, but it's a great opportunity to meet other people moving in that day as well. I might get them to swing by the complex later in the evening and they can see your apartment, but even doing your first shop is fun when you do it with new friends. It's all up to you, I don't think they have any rules against parents being there with you, and you would just have to sign them into the housing complex, but with everything going on and all the new people you meet, you'll be so excited to be there it won't be such a tough transition. You'll probably wish they were there about 2 weeks in when everything really sinks in and the homesickness can hit!
Thanks for the info. I didn't even know that they drove you to your complex. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't be that difficult to get my stuff set up by myself. But I think I might shop with my parents for the first one because they'll probably rent a car so it'd be easier to get to and from Walmart or whatever. We don't start Traditions until day two, right? But after that one shopping trip I'll probably be hanging out with my roomies or friends. Might see the folks one more time before I start work and then they'll probably head home. Ahhh! This is going to be such a change!
hahah kate are you talking about me? cos thats EXACTLY what my parents did!! Ya it was great!! they paid for my first walmart trip lol
Yup definitely was It's going to be a huge change, but the greatest one ever!! You'll for sure be homesick every now and then, I'd lived away from home multiple times before my program and still missed my family. But you'll get so busy working, going to the parks and exploring Orlando you'll have a blast!!! Traditions actually isn't until the Saturday after your arrival! The first few days are spent in the Commons doing mountains of paperwork and hearing talks.
Mine did the same, and I was "old" haha I did the check-in process on my own (I don't think they can come in for that) and somehow I remember them driving me to The Commons instead of the Disney people, as we knew where it was (my brother was there already). They paid my WalMart trip too, including a new tv and dvd player Knowing me, I probably got them to take me to IKEA too... That is definitely a bonus if you yourself are car-less, and your parents have a car there, you can go places outside of the places Disney offers you transportation to and from (basically just Disney property, Walmart and the Florida Mall once a week). IKEA being one of course, and there is another Walmart about 3 miles from the one Disney brings you to that is far less busy and more for locals rather than that one that is full of clueless tourists 24/7 (Just WAIT until June when the entire country of Brazil is there!!).
Here's another question(s). If I wanted them to come and pick me up to take me groceries or something later that day, could I stand and wait for them outside the security check in to the complex? And when I came back, do I just have to say to security that I'm a resident to get us all in? Do I need ID on that first day or do I even get ID on that first day? Sorry for all the questions.
Ya you can wait outside the gate no problem. And as far as I remember for the first day you get a paper that lets you on the buses and in/out of the complex then within a couple of days you get your photo id card. At the gate, you show your id and tell them you need to sign your guests in. You will get a form to fill out, on which you write your name and apartment number and the names of all of your guests (up to 3). They show their id and it gets photocopied onto the form and there you go - they are signed in for up to 3 days. They can stay as late as 1am, and don't let a guest get caught after 1am, as you will lose your sign in privileges and believe me, from experiences, that sucks BIG TIME. Thankfully I had wonderful friends who would sign my hubby (well, then bf/fiance) in all the time.
No worries about losing privileges. I'm crazy when it comes to following rules. So can I sign them in when we drive up to the gate? It doesn't take that long does it? And if I want to sign them after the three days I just go to the gate and tell them that they're coming before they show up? Thanks for all the help!
You can sign them in when you drive to the complex. You just have to hop out of the car, fill out a form, they photocopy their IDs and yours (for when you have one). and you're good to go. 3 days later you would do it again. If you sign them in before they arrive (as in you're not with them when they are going through the gate) they just have to give their IDs, tell security you're apartment number and name, and they'll photocopy it and you're good to go. You'll get use to it, it's super easy and quick (usually) and will be second nature.
Good. Thats a relief. Sorry, but I worry about these things sometimes. I'm such a planner. I mean, I'm not even applying until July for Summer 2012! Fingers crossed that I get accepted! Thanks for the help.
Hi , I'm from the UK and also applying for the 2012 CRP programme! I will also be 19 upon arrival and its my first time ever being away from home, my mum has also said that if i get accepted she will fly over with me... Goodluck! Sarah
