Hey everyone, I've been reading a lot of helpful information here about opening an account there, either with Vista or Suntrust, or any other bank. My question is: how do you make online payments (like booking a flight, ebay, booking a hostel, etc) WITH your US-created account (the one your Disney payments are deposited)? 1) Can you use your provided debit card online? Any problems? 2) Can you apply for a credit card - with Vista/Suntrust (or other) even if you're not from the US? Thanks a lot for your help, and please feel free to add some other methods/tips you know!
When you open a US account (Partners, Suntrust etc), you are given either a VISA or MasterCard debit card to use with the account. You can use this to make payments for things online (be careful though, because the banks like to put a "hold" on the amount you spend, and this can sometimes make you go overdrawn). You can apply for a US credit card once you have your social security number (normally arrives after about a month or so after the appointment), but it is best to wait for a couple of months (after you open your bank account and link the account to your social security number) so that you have a bit of a history. Best credit card for new internationals would be Capital One - but you want to be VERY careful with credit cards! Hope this helps!
Thanks for your great answer, really informative 8) But are you sure we're able to pay online using our Debit Card? Did you try it? Call me a newbie but I've never been able to do that in my country :-\ Maybe because here we're given VISA Electron Debit Cards (with no security number) and in the US you'll be given a normal VISA Debit card with a number and a security code to type online, and your account gets deducted promptly after the purchase. I hope that works cause I really don't wan't to need a US credit card for that. You can give me some links on the subject and I'll take my time researching! Tks again
I have an american debit card and I'm able to pay online for stuff Just ask when you open the account to be sure...
That's what I wanted to hear But I will confirm when I get there, since this 'cards' thing is always a bit confusing from what I've been reading online... Thank you!
