I think i will probably be bringing at least $2000-3000 down, but i am gonna skip the travellers cheques. I have a debit card which is much easier to carry around and safer

I brought about a grand cash down and I was fine ( did pay my flight extra with my cc though ). I had my income for groceries and rent and those things and my account back home for partying, shopping, trips. And I spent about 6 grand I would say  Don't miss a single penny though, it was all worth it. ;D

Oh March people if you have visa debit cards take them with u as u can put them into the cash point and Most british banks charge 1.50 regardless of how much u get out. saves u taking too much cash with u... :)

i was gona ask that about debits marie! as i have mine with all my wages in and interest free overdraft of £1500 should i need to use it! thats quite good then the charge, take it the same charge applies using it to pay in shops?

yeah im excited and not, cos theres only 4 out of our 20 group of friends goin bk, but good things like no martin! so theres good and bad although i will miss him bein there, we had a good season last year, eventhough we always got in trouble for showing 'improper behaviour' to customers oops lol. aww last year was great, b very hard to beat that year!

Yeah i wasnt sure if people would know about visa debit cards, wondered afterwards if people would think i was stating obv! Switch cards dont work tho just visa debit and obv any credit cards...
Theres no charge to use it in the shops or at least lloyds tsb dont charge only for cash point! And given commision charges i dont think 1.50 matters esp if u draw out $100 a time. Think i'll just take enough cash to cover imediate charges andfirst few days then use my debit card till i get paid into american bank.

Improper behaviour Sara! Lol why i am not surprised by that! Im sure ull make loads of new friends! U never know what hot new guys may show up!

    Have a great time away!

I'm attempting to save about $2000 to bring down with me. I'll also have my visa just in case. I think I'm going to bring quite a bit of it in travellers cheques. My debit card doesn't work in the US. Tip for any Cdns who have a President's Choice debit card.... it doesn't work in bank machines in the US. They don't use interac down there. It needs to have Plus or Cirrus on the back of your card. That's the one thing that's gonna be really hard for me in the US... not using debit everywhere I go. I rarely carry cash. Ah well... everything's a new experience.

    Hey Gals and Guys,

Hey Chelle, as for me, I think I will take around 1000 dollars or so.
As they say u get ur first paycheck two weeks later, and also for the food
    and of course for FUN!!!

But I also take this money to get all the payments we have got to pay.

    See ya
    Robb ;D

Take mostly travelers checks. They're safer than cash. A credit/debit card is helpful, too. But don't bring too much cash. Then people will know you're from out of the country, without hearing your accent first.

i don't have a credit card and it is probably a good thing!!!! lol...i have enough trouble keeping my spending down with my debit card. Although i will probably end up getting a cc before i go down

i think i will too robyn, just to be on the safe side :p

well my switch should work in the US, cos its changed to maestro/cirrus, and as long as the machines display the symbol i should be ok, i hope! but cc for back up anyway

    Hey guys,

Just to confirm what sara said, even if your card is switch and not yet changed to maestro it'll still work in the US as its likely that any old switch cards will have the maestro symbol on the back!! So dont worry - its not only Visa debit that works out there!! Woking in a bank Ive had to explain this to customers many times lol!!

Im not gonna be taking my debit card out there anyway - although your bank may say theres only a £1.50 flat charge they will often also charge a percentage as a commission for the exchange, plus you could end up losing out on a fluctuating exchage rate.

Also, at the bank we never recommend people take their debit cards with them as if they get lost then youre pretty much stuck until your bank can order you a new one and by the time its been sent out to you in the us youre looking at a couple of weeks with no access to your bank account or your money. Travellers cheques are the much safer option as you can get them replaced within 24 hours if theyre lost/stolen!!

Am I right in thinking that we can open a bank account when we're there? If we can then I think Ill just pay all my TCs into there and then hopefully get a debit card on my US account. Is that possible does anyone know?

I waffled on a bit there didnt I!?!? Sorry about that!!!
