For just the first week its recommended that you bring like $300-500 USD. I personally am probably gonna bring more than that... and then I will also bring my plastic. The amount they recommend is just for your first week's rent, groceries, and work shoes. There is no way that is the only stuff I am going to buy my first week; there is also whatever you need for your apartment (stuff for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, maybe a TV), I would say that their estimate is for people who are being very concervative on what they buy.

That should be more than ample - I would recommend a credit card as well, just in case of totally unforeseeable eventualities!

Talking of money...this might seem slightly bonkers but what do people think about buying a car out there?

Im only going for the ICP so not sure its worth it but everyone seems to think it's really worthwhile having a car and it would be nice to have that freedom...i thought maybe buy a complete banger for a few 100 dollars (stupid french keyboard there's no dollar sign!!! ;)) then sell it on to another CM when I leave?? I could, of course, be mad - everyone's been saying that for years .)

A car would be useful-but I don't think it'd be worth it for 3 months...

Just mooch off someone who's there for a year! Simple! :D

i think that if you wanna get a car go for it, you could buy a very cheap one i suppose and then you never have to rely on others or on buses.
However, it is possible to survive on the buses and with the friends you may make you could all chip in to hire a car when you wanna go on a day trip so both options are cool but id go for the second one as you will be wrking a lot and maybe wont get your moneys worth for using a car, and if sum1 doesnt wanna buy it off you, well youd be in a sticky situation. hope this helps or makes sense! lol x

Remember though, that if you get a car, you also have to get car insurance and (I'm guessing) motor tax.

Personally, I think that getting a car out there is more trouble (and more money!) than it's worth.

Now I might be completely wrong (and I probably am) but isn't the ICP schedule work like 5 or 6 days a week and take classes on the days you're not working? In otherwords aren't you buys every day as it is? If so, you probably wouldn't have time to make day trips anywhere so you'ld just need the busses...

And if I'm wrong, nevermind lol.

I didn't know anything about classes...but if there are, never mind then, I'm sure it'll be interesting!!

See and that right there is where I could be completely wrong lol, for some reason i thought ICP's took classes at Disney U while there... maybe I heard wrong or made that up or something.

Now you're mixing up the International College Program and the College Program for International people :p I don't know how anyone could get confused about them :D Hehe.

The ICP is a three month (summer) program, with no classes. The CP for International people (aka the 'J1 Academic Program') is a year-long program that does involve classes. So tinydancinggirl, you won't be doing classes! As to the ICP work schedule, it varies. When I first arrived, I was working 4 twelve hour days, with three completely free. Nearer the time I was coming home, I ended up working 6 days, but only 9.5 hours. It ultimately depends on business needs: current cast levels, park opening hours, etc.

And of course, if you want more hours, I believe it's fairly simple to schedule them using the cast portal :)
