Hey, just wondering if I would need to get a new mobile phone while in America or whether I could just change the sim card? I really dont want to shell out money for another mobile! Then again do you think we would need to use mobiles? I certainly wouldnt use it to ring home but to text/ring other people i meet at disney.
right the situation with american mobiles is it is very hard to buy a 'sim only' package as most people buy fones. on www.virginmobileusa.com u can buy a new fone for $99 and then u have to top it up $20 every 3 months. it has all the pricing there which is reasonable, u cud use ur normal uk mobile out there providing its tri/quad band. but obviously it would cost more. as ur there for 4 months i don't know which option would b best 4 u, as im there for a year i'm buying a new phone as soon as i arrive for both txtin home, txtin/callin ppl from disney, cos its pretty cheap. hope thats helped xxx
yeah its definately worth a look at. i was wondering but since matt came bk from florida and let me know the process with virgin kinda clicked thats what im gona do. a year without a mobile would kill me. but yeah may b worth tryin 2 look at some american phone sites just incase there is a sim only option but i have heard its difficult to get them, not impossible just hard to find! xxx
I have just returned from WDW and my orange mobile didn't work out there so i bought a motorola flip phone for $200 you can but is off me for £40 ? It s on t-mobile pay as go in USA ! You can text home and people can txt to you in USA from home ! Mandy
I have a question about the top-up phones : Do I have to pay when someone calls me or send me a message on my cell-phone ? I mean, I receive a message and I pay to read it. Or, someone is calling me, and as I'm talking to him, I also have to pay. Thanks for your answers.
on the american cells, i know if you're on virgin usa you DON'T pay to receive the texts/sms. from virginusa: Voice Calls Calls are 25 cents a minute for the first ten minutes each day, and then just 10 cents a minute for the rest of the day. Simple as that. Picture Messages 25 cents for each person you sent to. 25 cents to receive. Text Messages 10 cents apiece to send, free to receive. VirginXtras 10 cents per day to browse + cost of application. Ringtones and Voice Greetings are free to access. International $0.25 to $0.75/minute + Airtime with international u buy a phone card, then the international calling charge goes off there, then there's the additional 25 - 75 cent call depending on country, like i know UK is 35 cents. hope that helps xxx
The only way you'd be able to use your phone from wherever (UK, Italy, France..etc) is for you to have the programming on your phone changed, they actually call it "un-locking". This allows you to use sim-cards from any company (Verizon, Bell, Telus, etc). As was mentioned you'll need a GSM phone so you can use a sim card. If you buy a phone in the US, and have them unlock it, you can bring your SIM card from wherever and then people from "back home" can call you local (as long as they were a local call before) but for you to call them is overseas, or long distance (and the roaming charges are a bitch). Hope that wasn't technical, and if anyone thinks I'm wrong send me a message. Nio
yeah if you buy a sim free phone u can use them, my phone is, cos i just bought the handset! lol linz, there's many things i don't know lol xxx
It is probably just better off to buy a new phone and plan all together. Depending on the company, you can get the phone for free with certain types of contracts. or you might have to pay like $20. Not too sure, but that is usually the way it is done here in Canada, and i can't see it being all that different just across the boarder.
Wow Sara - great info im gonna get one of those $99 phones i think - tho i may get a contract phone im not sure - as i know u can get a lot of free mins... xxx
