So, I have type 1 diabetes, which means I'm on insulin injections.. My question is directed at anyone who has been on the disney program with diabetes (but anyone else with a medical condition that requires medication as well)... how did you find it? How did you get insulin and other supplies? What about breaks during shifts? Would they let you go if you needed a break due to a low blood sugar or something, even if you weren't scheduled a break? My parents (and me I suppose) are somewhat worried about these things, especially getting medication in America, because we know healthcare isn't cheap! I still need to make an appointment with my specialist to discuss this, and my brief research into travel insurance hasn't found anything that covers prescriptions in America (although, I haven't undertaken any comprehensive research yet, as I have a while before I go..) But any thoughts, experiences, or suggestions would be a great help! Thank you!
Hey, im in a similiar situation, dont have diabetes lol but i do need medication so am also a little worried about how its gonna work when im out in Orlando. i havent sorted my medical insurance yet so dont know if im gonna be able to sort something out that will ease the cost of my meds out there lol anyway i start on the 7th december so ill post any stuff i find out once i get out there. meanwhile i second that some help/info from anyone whos allready been out there would be greatly appreciated! cheers guys
Ihave MODY (diabetes 2 plus associated things) take meds everyday - when i was out there i got a 4 month supply to take with me and i just took half what i was supposed to then on a visit home picked up more. if i get thru again its likely i will be on insulin and would like to know costs too - i do know when i ws sick and with disney i got antibiotics and drs visit and i had to pay like $50 but the medicagtion alone i was pescribed camer to over $300 so the insurance saved me a huge amount
Yeah I had a talk to my pharmacist and he says he could give me 6months worth of stuff, but I'll chat to my specialist about it too
I have to take medication me too and you can take your meds off with you no problems You can go with 6 months with no problem, you only have to let them in their original bottle. I think it is cheaper that way XD But I wonder, do I need to talk about my healt condition at the interview? Because I don't want them to not take me because I may be sick.....
I told them I had diabetes at my interview and that i have an elbow injury and they were completely fine with it. I think you should tell them though, just so they know straight away.
i have chrons disease, and had a major bowel operation when i was 18. the email most of us recieved yesterday from disney international programs has a form to fill out if you have any medical conditionas and what u need etc. the only thing with me, is because i am missing half of my bowels (sorry if your eating lol) i sometimes need the toilet more than most people, and not sure if to put that down, so i am going to ask Yummy when we have our phone call
crohns is a bad one mate! i feel for ya lol yeah i'd speak to Yummy first about it lol i never had to fill any forms about medical stuff tho i dont think? hope i havent missed sumthin out haha im worried now
Oh! I got colites Ulcéreuses (I don't know it in english) and it a disease in the same family that Crohns... So I was worrying about that but now I'll juste tell them anyway I haven't benn sick since 5 years! Me too, if i'm sick I just need to be near a toilet XD And the only timeI went to disney, I was sick because I just have the diagnostic and I did well so.... And I must say taht Disney got a lot of toilets LOL.
yeh il speak to Yummy when i get my call! and yes, its Ulcerative colitis, lol. my dad has that and chrons too! yeh Disney has plenty of toilets just hope they let me leave to use it when i need it! lol
Well Jess I think your only there for 6 months which debunks my original suggestion. When your on the one year program you can buy into the Disney Health package things which includes drugs plans and such (not free but cheaper) and I was going to say go that way. Being only 6 months (I think?) it will be easier for you just to bring a whole supply with you if you can. Might want to check with immigration on that prior though. You never know with the US airport safety and how frequently their laws change. Might be illegal to breath on a plane before long...
Tiny warning here for you Gary... "Servers don't pee" That's not just a Disney thing, that applies to Servers all over the world!
So what.. you don't get toilet breaks? Thats crazy! Even when I was a waitress we could still pee if we needed to! LOL
what vikki means is that when your in this job you just dont have the time to be going to the toilet all the time. when your serving your busy (and i mean on the go, running around, talking to guests/chefs, taking orders, cleaning tables etc) the entire shift, you dont really ever have "down time" or anything..... sorry, thats just what this industry is like!!! you also have "side work" to do in addition to actually serving so when your not out on the floor you have to be doing your side work (anything from filling up the ice machine to cleaning high chairs etc!!) you as a server are responsible for your own section of guests, if you disappear then noone else is going to look after them!
well if not then il just have to do other jobs instead of that then. oh well! stupid body! lol or if i eat less (as i eat quite a lot tbh lol). in a typical good day from wake to sleep i can go to the restroom maybe 3 times? on a bad day maybe 6/7. it all depends so start eating less now and see how i go
I'm currently asking around here atm, trying to get as much info. General consensus is that if you have a condition it's good to go with the disney insurance after 3 months as there are different levels of cover and you can use the health centre at epcot which saves trying to find a doctors if you need one. In terms of needing to medicate/ go to the toilet at work...managers and coordinators would be able to help cover you etc. If I find out more I'll post again!! xx
the insurance that disney offer after you have worked there for 4 months is great and i would recommend it to everyone, there are different levels of cover so you can decide what suits you the best but even the most comprehensive cover is still very affordable and the payment gets taken out of your pay cheque each week so its hassle free!!! I dont have any medical conditions so im not sure how muxh the disney insurance covers for specific things but def worth checking out before you go elsewhere for your insurance!!
hey gary on the toilet breaks thing with the diabetes i pee a lot so i had a similar problem - on podium and chippy and even assigning (taking board to the loo with u hehe) it wasnt a problem - food running it was a problem esp if u were first in cos for like 2 hours or so there is only u running the food, serving it wasnt a huge problem during lunch cos u have fewer tables and if u ask the assignor nicely they could hold off seating u for a few mins so u can run to the loo, pm shifts were harder tho - after 6 - 9 ur very busy with all ur tables and not a lot of chance to go to the loo cos u can guarantee they will all want refils and stuff. obv once fireworks start its okay they dont normally want u then - but that time is usually used by most people to get up to date with their sidework and to start prepping cheques, sorting out dessert orders so as soon as the fireworks have finished u can get the guests out and go home. that all being said i managed fine and so long as u dont take the pi55 then sometimes you can ask someone else to just watch ya tables while u nip to the loo quickly - once u have they all have their food etc but its not something you want to do regularly as it will annoy everyone else if its a regular thing other than that stocking and beer cart u should be okay if u need loo breaks cos stocking your wandering round moving stuff so your back stage and can pop in loos there if needed and beer cart you can normally get smooene on podium (one of seaters) to cover while you nip to the loo.
