Different airlines have different rules. You're better off checking with whoever you've booked your flight with.

hi i know from the 25th Nov 2009 virgin is changing to just one case of 23kg but the excess charge is going down to £30 from £90 for the extra 23kg, but thats only at the time of booking. It will be a slightly higher price at the airport.
Though if u book before the 25th you still get the 2 cases as u booked before the change.

Like VikkiLillyBee said it depends on the airline you're traveling with. I know KLM, Delta, Northwest and Air-France changed their baggage allowance from 2 pieces to 1 piece of 23 kg per passenger. The amount for a 2nd bag is €50,- or $50 (depends from the country you're traveling from).

    Some other airlines:
    EI - Aer Lingus (1 bag allowed, 2nd bag costs €40 / $50)
UA, CO, US - United Airlines, Continental, US Airways (1 bag allowed, 2nd bag costs $50)
MP - Martinair (1 bag allowed, 2nd bag costs €50)
LH - Lufthansa (2 bags allowed 23 kg each)
VS - Virgin Atlantic (2 bags allowed 23 kg each / this will change probably soon)

As you can see lots of airlines have the 2nd bag policy. If someone has other airline/airport questions just post them on the message board and I will be helping you guys if possible. I'm working for KLM and Air-France. On the airport we check-in passengers for Delta, Continental, Aer Lingus, Northwest, Copa, China Southern, Martinair and some others, so I can give you more information about these.

    Greetings,
    Jason

As far as I know, American Airlines and Air Canada also allow two bags with 23 kg each.

West Jet allows 2 bags at 50lbs apiece! Though I don't remember what the extra bag fee was... I think it was $75 per bag.

But West Jet flights rock! They're so much fun!

Why do West Jetters care so much? Because they're also West Jet owners! :D

Wow, that's mean! Can't understand why (not even all!) Europeans have to pay 50$ for their 2nd bag.
