It depends on you. If you are the type to bring your lunch and not hit the odyssey everyday, you'll save more money. If you aren't going to hit House of Blues, PI and Jellyrolls each week, you'll save more money. Don't recommend wasting your money on a cell phone. Yes, I had one...BUT...I had a North American plan that allowed me to call back home to Canada for free (well, included). It wasn't cheap, but my parents liked being able to find me 24/7, so they paid. You don't really need one to be honest.

but isn't it really expensive to use your phone in america, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a phone over there with an american subscription..??

I think I'll buy a cell phone or, if I can, I just buy an american subscription and I use it on my mobile, it should work, it's a tri-band.... Or not?
    I'll see there anyway ;D
So, do you think it is possible to save money there?
I don't want to spend all the money I'll earn there!!

for all the UK peeps out there i have an O2 contract phone and 1 message from the USA to home will cost u the same as 4 messages u send at home, so if u have a text allowence of 100 at home u can send 25 a month in the USA home

    This is for you Celephaïs!

It's quite expensive to use a norwegian cell phone in USA yes, but to send a message it costs around 2.50 NOK (that is for easytalk with Netcom), it depends on what network you choose though.

But as I said earlier, I'm only bringing it as a safety in case of an emergency.

I know it's very cheap to call home from USA with a regular phone, and you can send as many free sms as you want to in several websites, such as www.biip.no which I'm using.

    Yeah, ...
I have telenor, so it'll be even more expensive, think it costs something like NOK 5 to send message abroad...
But I think I'll get a phone anyway, only way to get hold of friends when they're not nearby, of course only works if they have phones as well... And don't have a watch, so need it to tell time...

5 NOK?? That is really expensive! But even though, I know to send a sms from LA to Norway cost the same as in Norway...so Florida is more expensive :-\

Just remember to bring a cell phone with triband, or you cannot use it in USA...and also remember to have a mobiloperator that allow you to use your cell phone in USA, because not everyone does. I had to change mine from "netcom-young talk" to "netcom-easy talk".
