Lol! Think I might look into buying a laptop either before I go- or asap when I get over there! And I'm definitely going to buy something to straighten my hair with- it'll drive me insane otherwise!

It's a good idea to buy it while living in USA.

You can get cheaper prices or a special deal.

Make sure you bring a Wireless Router so that you can use internet anywhere in your apartment. If you don’t have on you can typically get them as low as $40 some times here in the US.

    Hi Everyone....

Definately decided to bring a laptop with me. Don't have it yet, but will be getting one.

Hey Jo... If you're not opposed to getting a refurbished laptop, your dad might be more likely to help you out if it means less for him to pay. If you check out Dell.ca, they have a factory outlet with refurbished laptops. Staples Business Depot has some too. A place called Factory Direct here in Toronto has a website, factorydirect.com, has refurbished ones too. I'm thinking $1500 + might be a little too much for me to shell out right before leaving.

lol Jimbobdaga..... no, no,... I meant that I was going to buy a refurbished because a new one here in Canada seems to be around $1500. That amount was too much to spend on a new laptop right before I leave. Sorry, for the confusion. A refurbished laptop on the sites mentioned before starts from about $400 and up.

Hey Sandra, when you say refurbished, what exactly has been done to them? I'm just scared of shelling out a whole lot of cash and getting a computer that doesn't work or has many problems down the road.

I think "refurbished" means different things to different companies. I think for some, the computers are ones that have come off of a lease. Most come with some kind of warranty. They are used, somehow. You can probably just ask. I'm thinking I will probably get one from Dell because I know the company stands behind their products. The desktop that I have, I have had for 5 years. It's no longer under warranty, but I can call their support line anytime and they will walk me through any kind of problem I am having. Their refurbished laptops come with a warranty and the option to extend. I don't know much about Factory Direct, but I'm sure Staples Business Depot will give you a warranty as well. Some come with and OS installed and some don't. The Dell ones come with and OS and a word processing program and some other programs as well.

    Sandra :)

Ah, I see, Sandra. I checked out dell.ca but I can't find any information on the factory outlet. I had been looking at getting a used one before because I'm a broke student, hehe So that would help a lot!
    Thanks, Jo :D

As Sandra said, refurbished computeres are used.

They were returned to the company and they set them up to their original set up... so they are almost like new...

It's a good deal if you are under a budget.

Dell provides 60 days warranty for refurb products.
