hey guys, just wanted to start a new thread about what the essentials are when packing/bringing things to America. and asking other questions about little things i was thinking about, but are not a big deal! :)

was wondering, to the people who have already been out at Disney - what items were u really glad that u brought with you when u started? and what items did u bring that u really didnt need atall and wish u had have left at home?

is there many things u miss from the home/ UK? like brands of products and particular things you can only get here?

the costumes look like theyre not really heat friendly... is it not roasting wearing those long skirts and blouse? or are they kinda breatheasy materials?

ooooo its only 9 weeks to go until im on my way to Florida! EEK! start UK Merch on 7th December  ;D cant wait to see you all!

    Hey hun!!

I know that Kim & Lucy both took a duvet out with them as they didn't want to use a comforter.... and they brought the duvet cover sheets, but as the beds are a different size out there I think most people get mattress protectors there!!

I know it may sound really silly, but a friend of mine is out there at the minute and she said to stock up on white/skin colour bra's, we have to wear them when we are in our uniforms and apparently they can be quite pricey over there so do a primark stock up!! Also flesh coloured tights, some of the girls go through them really quickly, and she recommened the primark ones with the thicker bottoms for your feet!!

Random, but she said that it helps!!! :D ::) xx

There was stuff to remind you of home... Like the British section in Walmart/ Publix...

I usually rode passed it on my shopping cart...

The real question is "are there things to remind you of America when you are home?" Being home SUCKS!!! :-\

i took wayyy too many clothes out there and shoes and ended up living in flipflops or the occasional pair or trainers/pumps = also took hair straighteners and ended up buying some cheap ones out there - same with hair dryer which i got at a throw out.

i really missed scuzz mags lol so i had my friends and family send me some every now and again and they got passed around - things like now, chat etc you cant get them out there

the costumes arent that hot when you are wearing them you get used to it

i would second the bras and the tights thing - i wore knee highs tho cos i preferred them used to get through loads

main things to take are photocopies of all your documents then if you ever lose something you have a copy / photos of ya family and mates and copies of any prescriptions etc you are taking. im diabetic so i took out some print outs from my dr of all my latest blood stuff so if anything happened ihad the info there

A note on tights, we don't actually have to wear them anymore. A lot of people still do just to stop your shoes rubbing & feet getting so sweaty, but they're not an essential anymore. If you do want to wear them, then deffs bring some with you.

Also a bit of a random note, but if you're on the pill, try and get a years worth before coming as it's like $40 for one month out here! I know loads of girls have had problems getting it.

I wouldn't bother bringing a duvet. They're really bulky and you can get a comforter for about $30...they're a bit thinner than a duvet too, so better in the heat.

I wouldn't worry about the costumes, especially in merch. You'll be mostly inside in the air con. You'll only be outside on cart and they rotate that about every 45 mins. Feel for the F&B's...our costumes are thicker material, we have more layers and we have to stand outside for 10 hours sometimes lol.

really? haha - why did u not apply again then to come out this year? you would know what the score is going over a second time so would be easier! :p

why did they not want a comforter taz? the weather getting warm makes it harder to sleep in the kinda duvets we would have over here... although they are more cosy :)

the tip on the bras and tights is really good, thanx! see its those kinda wee things that im wanting to find out about before i go, so i know what to expect and what to definately bring! i wear those pull up short tights for work atm, and i go through them alot! so in the warmer weather will be even worse! hehe
im suprised about the bra thing, i didnt think of all things in america that underwear would be expensive :D

too many clothes is a tough one, i duno what to bring out of all i own! lol and shoes too - i should prob leave my winter boots etc. but then again i duno... do ppl really only ever wear flip flops? i wud prob wear more pumps than anything -i always worry ppl are gonna stand on my bare toes! hahah ::)
yea think il get a hairdryer over there, a good one to last the year! i need one with a diffuser part for styling my hair!
and i will defiantely bring copies of my documents, tres important!!!! thanx for the tips pink! :D

yea i was gonna get my medications all updated and try get a supply for a year, dont want the hassle of getting things mixed up over there!
aww poor f&b folk! i knew it would be hard work for that so i wanted merch to be my first choice... well the main reason was that i cant hold a tray properly, i must have weak wrists or sumthin because anytime iv held one it topples over :S and definately wouldnt want the embarassment and frustration of that happening all the time! haha. i have experience in both but im so glad to get merch! and thanx for the tips emma!

another question abt a small matter... does anyone know what the regulations are on nail polish? i assume for f&b you cant wear any for health and safety? but for merch, would it just be plain, clear polish or can u wear typical colours like red?

in ghe disney look book it gives you exact description on what you can and cant wear on ya nails - clear is okay if i remember rightly

i think some people take duvets cos of the a/c in the appt - if you in 8 people then u can guarantee someone will turn the ac up wayyy hi and you will freeze and then someone else will turn ti down low and you will roast and then you end up with a cold!

re: flipflops most of people seemed to wear them all the time - its good to air the feet when you have been wearing horrible fitted shoes in the sun and rain for 8/9 hours

I got my flip flops for $2 from Walmart and no word of a lie, I actually live in them. I wear them on nights out and everything! lol. Pink's right, after wearing horrible crocs and knee highs for potentially 10 hours at work, you'll be so glad to get your tootsies out into the light of day haha.

Merchies can get away with more in terms of nail polish/jewellery and stuff and in HRC their managers at the mo are so laid back they don't really care about much at all. I know a girl in HRC that actually made her lasses costume at work and her manager wasn't bothered lol.

Grooveyem- glad to hear that the merch managers are more relaxed... I know F and B have strict rules for a reason though...just glad I won't have much of that (not that I'm one for much rule breaking anyway!!). I'm kind of don't know what to expect with the working culture though? Guess I'll find out when I get there!!

Emz- I got a years supply of my medication (pill and my thyroxine) from my doctor...he said they're technically not meant to do more than three months, but he was like "I didn't give you anything extra...just go to different pharmacies". If you're struggling- go see a diff doc at your surgery and just ask for it on repeat so you can get it posted out!

dont take too much with you! thats my tip! just pack the essentials and get everything else after you arrive, as a girl id say to stock up on underwear and tights (if you want to wear them!)

RE: The pill ------ yeah if your on it get a 12 month supply in the UK, it costs a fortune over there and its a hassle! or try something more long term like the implant etc (i have it and would reccomend it to EVERYONE!!!!!!! especially if your like me and forget to take the pill at the same time everyday!!)

there is a UK food bit in walmart but be warned it all costs a fortune as its all imported from home but they have stuff there like weetabix, robinsons juice, heinz beans, HP sauce etc etc etc altho the only food from home i missed was normal tasting bread! all the american stuff tastes sweet and just not like UK bread!!!

The costumes are ok really, yes its pretty warm when you out in the sun but for the most part your going to be inside in the air con so you dont need to worry about that!

Jackson/ anyone else that's been out there for winter- how cold did it get? I wasn't going to bring a coat (my parents can bring one at xmas if I need it)...but what about jumpers and stuff? worth taking quite a few? x x

  13. Lesley86

    Lesley86 New Member

take a coat and a few cardis/jumpers coz yeah it does get nippy in the winter and you also need something when you go out for dinner etc as the air con can get a bit chilly in some places!! wouldnt take LOADS of winter stuff tho, a couple of jumpers will do you fine!

I just wanted to say WELL DONE everyone for getting in, and thanks for all the ideas - I'm working In UK F&B March 8th and even though I know it's a while away, I've been worried about what to bring with me as well :-[ Especially as I'm going to have to leave my beloved speakers behind to make way for clothes!

Hope that everyone's been having a good weekend!
Am so excited to meet everyone in person :)

Hi. Thank you for starting this. Some of my questions is answered, allthough the information about the pill didn't regard me ;)

If someone down there can answer some questions about the first days I will be happy for it. What are we doing? Is it easy to understand the transportation system? I think we are going to use it allready the day after arrival so I had a nightmare last night about going on the wrong bus and I were late for the first meeting :p
And the last question for this time; Is it as easy as people say to get along with people down there?

Looking forward to see u all in the beginning of December :) And sorry for bad English writing skills, my oral is better as all the other Norwegian people I think ;)
