    Hello Everyone,
My name is Heidi and I will be starting in Disney on September 16th, from Canada!  I am looking foreward to going, I just have a quick question if anyone knows...is it worth it to bring a laptop to Disney, I heard there is internet connection in the rooms, and  also, if we have to pay for the connection if we have a laptop?

    Thanks!

    Heidi ;D

    Hi Heidi

Where in Canada are you coming from...I'm staring on Sept 6th and I'm from Ottawa.

I know a couple of people that have taken their laptops...

I also found this topic further back in the forums about the internet in the commons : http://www.thefairground.com/smf/index.php?topic=222.0

It seems to be that the internet is free and fairly reliable, so if you already had a laptop it might be worth it to take!

    Welcome to the boards...

    Hey , hows it going?
I am from the Niagara Falls area and will be working in Merchandising. Have you already heard with a confirmation for departure and all that for Disney? Because I am still waiting for mine....I am coming to Ottawa in August to visit my brother! What will you be doing in Disney?

    Hey ladies!

I am from Canada as well. I'm from Toronto and wish that I was sitting waiting to go like both of you!!!! But, I've already been so I can answer questions instead.

DEFINITELY, take your computer!!!! The internet was installed just before I left. The computers in the lab are horrible and there are only a few. You'll find it much easier to communicate with friends back home on the computer if you have one in your apartment.

I was Merch/Attractions, so if you have anymore questions feel free to email me.

No, I haven't heard about confirmation and everything yet...I've heard that us Canadians don't get anything until about 1 month before our departure :( ... I did get all excited today...I had a letter that I had to pick up at the post office because it was too big for my mailbox...but it was just my diploma :( :D

I'll be working in merchandise at disney...so we'll be working together!!

@Shan...thanks for the advice on the computer...I've been wanting to get a laptop for ages and I almost have enough saved up...so I think I'll be getting one this summer and bringing it with me...I think it will save a lot of hassel!

@Heidi...if you have some time when you come to visit your brother, give me a shout!! I'd love to meet some more people that are going in Septemeber!! my msn is zetaome@hotmail.com ... feel free to add me!

Theres an electrical chain store out there called best buy, i had a lot of mates who got laptops from there for a decent price (cheaper than the uk) or go on the dell website as they have some good deals over there. Basically wait till u get out there though as it will be cheaper.

I wish i had a laptop out there as the commons computers are terrible and almost always broken, and there are not that many computers available for you to use in epcot backstage either, only like 8 for every single employee of epcot!

Buy a Laptop here. Whether on finance or an outright purchase, it's really good value here. Good call about Best Buy.

But if you get nice roommates, all of you could possibly chip in and buy a desktop computer. I got mine from Dell for less than $400 ($450-500 after tax) (a business machine, so I didnt buy it for games) and it's not only more powerful then my laptop back home, but it's half the price. It came with a monitor, CD-RW, mouse, wireless internet capability, keyboard and printer. I just needed speakers and a printer cable (about $30 for those). Getting a computer is highly recommended, as the others have said.

If any of you guys want a hand getting a computer, let me know!

Dunno about waiting until you get to Florida if you are from Canada. If you can get a good deal, like I did, it might work out pretty close to the same. Check out websites and see what you can find. Don't know if I'd buy a computer from Wal-mart. Pretty large and pretty specific purchase to buy from Wal-mart! If you buy in the US, your warranty might not be valid in Canada, so you may want to check that out. That's why I bought at home because I figured my comp would only be spending the year on vacation in Florida and after that it would be here.

Thats great, I will definetly look into buying a laptop sometime in August. I was also wondering if anyone knows what we need for the internet installed in the computer then, an Ethernet card or however it works, Im not very "computer smart." I just want to make sure it will work when i get there. THANKS!

You can use the internet via ethernet or wireless.

So what you basicly need is a wireless card or a network (ethernet) card. That's it :)

Definitely bring your laptop computer!!! It doesn´t cost you anything, you´ll just need an ethernet cable you can purchase at Wall Mart for a few dollars. If you´re as lucky as I was you may move into an apartment where there are already several cables available! ;)

Emails and stuff like that are also the cheapest way to keep in contact with your family and friends back home (even though there are cheap telephone cards, too!) and you can do that in your apartment; probably more comfortable than in the computer room at the Commons Clubhouse!

To use WLAN, I guess you´ll need an WLAN router in your apartment.

Ethernet capabilities are certainly catered for on the wall of each apartment! (A "box" was installed during my time there that connects you to the WDW server)

Wireless may be accomadated, I'm not sure. I think it will, and you can get this" Netgear" accessory for $30, that goes straight into the USB socket. Easy Installation! But do your research first....

Don't know if any one here cares that much about it but, the normal free internet is behind a firewall that they block gaming ports, torrents, ftp access, and a few other things, but you can call up and pay a extra $10 a month (total for the whole apartment) and they will take your internet off the firewall and you will be able to do all the fun things you could not do before.

I definately would care about ftp access and things (I have a website) but if it's only $10 a month I don't think I'd mind too much.

Oh, Kelly? If you buy a laptop in the US don't forget the voltage difference eans you wouldn't be able to bring it back here. The voltage is too high here I think.

on the voltage difference! the power packs should mean laptops can be used either side of the pond. all you would need is a converter plug when u get here and the power pack u get for charging the laptop can handle the voltage change!
