What is the sort-code and account number system in America. I was hoping to be able to transfer money over the net every so often from my UK account and wanted to know if it is possible if they have the same sort code and account number format/pattern as us?

I worked in several banks for far too long. If you want to transfer funds from the uk to the US you will need your Iban number (international bank account number) and you Bic code. The Bic code is the same for every customer in the bank. It can take a while for the transfer and if you want it done quickly its expensive. Best best if you have a credit card use it as an atm card. As long as it is in credit (ie a plus figure) most uk banks wont charge a csah advance fee and visa international have the best exchange rate in the world. So you can just transfer from your current account to your credit card.

Thanks - I think I got most of that. I think I may have to get a credit card then from what you were saying. Will have to ask my bank Lloyds TSBand see what they say!

I'd just like to reccommed that most folks get a credit card for going out there. You need one for everything! From hiring a car, to staying in a hotel (you can pay by cash or checking account debit card but they need to hold details of a credit card on file). A couple of my friends didn't have credit cards and they only got to do these things because the rest of us did. :-\

    Just a thought.

I already have a credit card, but thinking I am going to change my bank and get a graduate account...maybe...oh all the things to think about!!

I've found using Paypal the easiest way to transfer money. I only needed Routing (the US equivalent of sort-code) and Account numbers, it works relatively quickly, and the fees are not particuarly large.

What I am going to assume they mean, is you can make a payment to your account in GBP, or have someone send payment to you in GBP, and then within your account you are able to set up a direct deposit to an American Bank account, and as long as its more than $50 I believe that is free! It'll convert the currency at whatever paypals current rate is, and then deposit it to the account!

I am going to assume thats what was meant?

Colin is right; that was what I meant (except I didn't realise that if it was more than $50 it was free).

You can use paypal in teh same way but the exchange rate is one of worste you will find. If you want to go via the overcharging route Id use Westren Union or even better Neteller.
