its up to you what you do - i had insurance for 3 months and then disney insurance. I used the disney insurance several times for DR's appointmets and prescriptios and had o difficulties with it whatsoever. The main reason i did it this way was i wanted to take as much money out with me as possible and for me to get a years insurace to cover my medical condition was stupidly expensive (like £800ish). I also wanted to be able to come home durig my programme (again for Dr's stuff) and usually backpackers insurance doesnt cover you if you come home it finishes you have to stay out of UK entire time you have it - which would have meant taking out 2 seperate policies. Also I wanted to know I wouldt have to pay upfront myself for my medical care - again with some insurance you have to pay ya self and the claim the money back.

Disney do different levels of insurance that you ca sign up for which costs different amounts and some include dentist and some just include emergency dentist. It comes directly from ya pay cheque betwee $9ish - $20ish a week depending on cover you get.

Im sure people will be along who have used other insurance tho with info on that as well

    Hi pinksspideruk,

I noticed that you said you had a medical condition...I also have a long-term medical condition (Lupus) which is going to cost me ridiculous amounts to cover once I'm out there - Could you tell me a bit more about how you went about covering your health condition while you were out there, if you don't mind?

I'm being told that the easiest thing to do will be to fly back home to see my specialist, get my drugs & such in the middle of the program, as much as I don't want to...

Any help you could provide would be great, since I'm having a bit of a nightmare with it all!

    Meena x

I did just that - I came home half way through my programme to see my drs and stuff - have type 2 diabetes with complications so I take around 15 pills a day :S

My insurance through disney covered my scripts 70% of the costs i think that i could have paid for the more inclusive isurance but i didnt but i had to see a Dr to get the script which cost like $150 but that was covered by my insurance but i had to get receipts and send them in to the insurance as well as they asked for evidence i had seen the Dr

I mainly saw the Dr though as I had 3 really bad infections out there - the last being a severe respitatory tract one that nearly had me end up in hospital - caused by catching the flu (the one year i dont have my flu jab i got the flu)

I'm the same with my Lupus, I'm on 8 different types of medication & take around 15 pills a day, too.
Although, I have chronic symptoms on a day-to-day basis, my Lupus has been stable for 2 years with the medication I'm on, so I kinda begrudge having to fly all the way back home just for blood tests & prescription - rather get it done out there.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your horrible experience with the respiratory tract infection, hope it never comes to something like that again. I'm getting my flu jab tomorrow, have had to keep postponing it due to a chest infection - such a nightmare having a chronic condition sometimes, isn't it!?

I'm totally not down with the lingo, dunno if it's American or not (!), but what are 'scripts' exactly? How do they work?

sorry thats me scripts = prescriptions :)

My diabetes has been stable for a while but since last summer been having some trouble and it looks like I'm going onto insulin at some point this year - no idea how that would work stateside though if I get through the application process again.

I think though you will be okay - I would get fomr ya Dr's enough meds to last first 4 months techniocally they are only supposed to give you 2 months supply but most will give you extra if you explain also get all ya blood tests ad stuff done just before you go - your dr can give you a print out of all your results and all the meds your on etc to take with u. Then wait for ya disney insuranc eot kick in - go see a dr at the medicentre with all ya info explain your condition - have your dr's contact details with you too - they should be able to write you a prescription for rest of ya meds for your time out there

I thought it was prescriptions :) suppose I better get used to all the Americanisms now, hey?!

Thanks so much for your help, i was thinking that that was the best way to go about it once I was out there. I wanted to check beforehand whether Disney will definitely cover me for my Lupus - when I rang them they said they can't divulge information until you're an actualy employee, kinda annoying. So, I dunno whether I should get an American insurer that I know will definitely cover it once I'm out there (I know Blueshield do for instance, but I suppose I won't be able to sort all that until I get out...) But yeah, I'll take out as many drugs as is feasible, then go & talk to the doctor's once I'm out there. But it's reassuring to know that someone else with a chronic condition had a way of making it work without too much hassle :)

Are you applying for another Disney program then? :) I'm sorry to hear you've been having complications again, I hope they can get you on some treatment that works & suits you asap...

Also, I take it you just went with 4 months insurance prior to signing up with Disney Insurance? What insurer did you go for in the end?

Endsleigh have been really good with me, but I've heard of direct-travel, insure & go...any suggestions on which policy to go for? x

Can I ask you how much it cost you each month for your Disney insurance, they take it out of your wages, yeah?

i used the one that yummy recommended at the time cant remember what it was called just got it cos you have to have proof of insurance when you arrive

I cant remember exact amounts for disney but it was something like between $12-20 a week depending on level you had and what was icluded e.g. you could have your family covered as wellor your spouse/significant other and stuff

nice thing about doing it that way is you dont really notice your paying cos it comes straight form ay wages. you donty have to pay anything upfront for medical treatment. you can go home and come back and still be covered. your not paying quite such a big lump sum at the start of your programme and if for any reason you quit early you only pay for the time you have used so you wont have wasted extra cash.

I have applied for crp again :) hoping i get through as would really love to go back out cos im just a disney geek at heart
