Can anyone suggest a place to find or get insurance? Is it best to go for the Yummy jobs one? or is there another one somewhere?
you van prob get it from somewhere else but i just used the yummy one,for 4 months it was only like $80 or something (option A) cheap as chips really!!!
I got insurance from Yummy Jobs and paid $84 for the three months of the ICP, but think carefully about how likely it is you will have to claim. Obviously accidents happen randomly but some are more accident prone than others i.e. me Anyway, my point is, two days before I left the States I ended up in the Florida Hospital ER for 3 hours with anaphylactic shock (I have a peanut allergy). That 3 hour stay has cost $2000 so far (they're STILL sending me invoices 8 months later!!) - SRI, the insurers Yummy use, have paid up so far, but only to the tune of $600 - there is a $500 excess (deductible as they call it in the US) and then I think it's a 60:40 coinsurance, which means that they will only pay out 60% of the next $5000 and you have to cover the rest. I only found out what all these things meant when I had to claim!! If I go back to Disney in October I'll be buying my medical insurance from Endsleigh or similar. It costs 3 or 4 times as much but the excesses are much lower. That said, SRI have been very helpful and always paid out so far - they just don't pay out very much Just thought this might be useful!!
As i said in another topic, for the ICP i got the Backpackers insurance from here http://www.insureandgo.com/travel-insurance/Backpackers-Insurance.htm Its only a bit more than Yummys insurance (about 20 pounds), but the cover is much better and it covers travel as well as medical
I've had a look at that insurance and it seems handy, but we have a list of requirements in our pack and I'm not sure if it meets a couple of them. I might book Yummy's just to be on the safe side, but then I guess I have to get travel insurance. Where are the best places to get that?
In the first few days after you arrive you have to get your medical insurance checked by the health people at disney, and they said mine was fine!
So do I need bronze, silver or gold cover? It works out at £161 for 7 months. Yummy's matches this in dollars more or less for the same time period at $180. ??? So thats' around $300 for the Insure&go cover. Hmm I hate working out stuff like this and shopping around. Edit after reading Tiny's post. My friend used to work for a travel insurance depot and he says the SRI sounds like tosh if something actually happened and the 60:40 is rediculous. He's looked at Insure and Go and says it sounds ok, so I guess I'll go for that. Thanks Steamboat.
Yep it was pants. Very nice people but I got bugger all money back! Why couldn't I have just waited 2 days and then got sick on the NHS
what about the disney insurance though? Has anyone been sick once that one has kicked in and found it okay or should we get year long insurance in britain. I used endlseigh last time i went out to the states but i never had to claim. I'm more worried these days though as I've been hospitalised about 4 times in the last 6 months and though I'm fine now (kidney stones euch) I'm not wanting anything to happen again and get screwed! I had planned to get whatever for the 4 months then use disney's, thinking being on site would be more suitable? Anyone had experience or know more about these things??
Hey, I got Gold last time but i have no idea why cos its the most expensive. Bronze looks exactly the same altho the amount you have to pay out is more incase you have an accident (I think, i just took a travel insurance exam at work and i still dont understand this!). My friend who went out last year took the yummy policy into an Endsleigh insurance shop and they said it was crap. Its basically the minimum that Disney require, which isn't much considering medical in america is so expensive. The chances of something happening are small but i guess its better safer than sorry which Tiny found out the hard way. I checked how much it was to get regular travel insurance as well as yummys and it worked out quite a bit more expensive. On the next stage you'll have to add baggage which puts the price up again a little bit more!
Soif I get Backpackers gold that covers everything? Including baggage? And you get a nifty little card. I think I'm sold.
you should ring them up and talk to them see what they advise... but i think you still gotta pay baggage excess with Gold. This year i'l probably just get the broze plan + baggage. You'll get a 7 or 14 day 'cooling off' period where you can read through all the policy details and if you change your mind within the 14 days you can get a full refund. I originally had bought an Endsleigh insurance plan for last year but after i bought it, it didn't meet the requirements so had to get a refund!
does anyone who has done bunac before know if you can use their policies even if your not travelling with them? i used it last year and it was fine so i thought it might be easiest to get same again??
The card's really important!! You'll need to flash it at any medical person you need to see. You get one from SRI too but it's a crappy little bit of paper and I lost it...and then I went to hospital and couldn't remember my insurance company...so I paid up front and claimed it afterwards. VERY BAD IDEA!!! They keep sending me invoices for all kinds of stuff ($386 for an IV!!! Thank God for the NHS) and they've sent a debt collector after me as well for something they never even invoiced me for... Anyway, moral of the story, carry your insurance details at all times (which is why the Insure and Go card is great ) and if you don't have them just say you have no money!!!
Thanks I'll give them a call next week after I've finished my dissertation. Sounds like you had a real tough time so best to pay that little extra I guess.
i have a medical exemption card here in england, which basically means i dont have to pay for prescriptions because of being permanetly on thyroxine tablets (i have no idea why that means i dont have to pay for ANY prescription, but hey, i'm not complaining!), does anyone know if it will be valid in america?
I don't mean to worry you I am merely making a point to just say check all your options I'm just the big weirdo who lands herself in hospital for stupid reasons! (My trip to the ER that time was cos I ate dry peanut butter cereal in my friend's car. I'm so smooth) My mates don't call me Calamity Jones for nothing!!
rachet i doubt it will be. i get all ym meds for free here in the uk cos im diabetic but i know i will prob end up having to pay for at least a few months whilst im in the states as most drs wont give u more than 3 months supply at a time. ive looked at the cost of the generic form of my meds in the states and it works out at $50 a month plus tax!!!im thnking of starting to hoard my meds before i go lol. i think tho u can get someone else to collect ur script and bring it out to u which im planning on getting my mum and mate to do so i have about 10 months supplies when im out there
i spoke to my doctor about it since i have ibs medication and the pill so I need a constant supply and he said he can't have anyone else fill my meds for me to take out. Unfortunately because I've been in hospital and need a letter from him about it I can't even fake it that I'm at home and just doing a refil! But he's letting me get my 6 months worth before I leave and I've begun hoarding as much as I can in reserve so at best I'll just need 3 or 4 months worth once out there!
