I left 2 weeks before they all hit last year!!! Another girl and I were very upset because we were on the Hurricane Committee and everything. We got excited once that one was headed to Orlando and our Manager told us that they never come there and not to hold our breath! HA! They showed her! My boyfriend was there for 2 of them and did the Hurricane Committee in EPCOT for the first one...hated it...and hung out in his apartment with lots of beer for the second one. He missed the third by like 2 days. Shan

from weather.com Another active hurricane season expected weather.com June 1, 2005; 12:00 a.m. ET Hurricane experts anticipate another active Atlantic hurricane season in 2005, following last year's historic and destructive storms. Forecasters at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), predicted as many as five major hurricanes this year in their annual outlook, released in mid-May. The NOAA outlook forecasts 12 to 15 tropical storms this year, with seven to nine of those becoming hurricanes. Of that group, forecasters expect three to five to become major hurricanes, which means a Category 3 storm with winds exceeding 111 m.p.h. The forecast does not predict, however, how many of those storms might make landfall. On average, two major hurricanes hit the United States every three years. Last year, there were 15 tropical storms. Nine of them became hurricanes -- six of them major. An unprecedented four hurricanes hit Florida -- Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. (See this year's storm names) Historically, "above-normal" seasons average two or three landfalling hurricanes in the continental United States, according to NOAA. "You will hear seasonal forecasts of Atlantic storms and hurricanes, but remember the ones that strike land are important, not the total number that form in the Atlantic Basin," said Dr. Steve Lyons, tropical weather expert at The Weather Channel. "[But] it only takes one in your area to change your community." The head of the National Weather Service emphasized that it's crucial to be prepared if you live in a hurricane-prone area, even if you are some distance from the coast. "As we ... look at another highly active season, preparation plans should consider that these storms carry severe weather, such as tornadoes and flooding, while moving inland." (Get tips on preparing your home) Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends November 30. The season typically peaks from late August through October. Forecasters say their outlook considered the trend, since 1995, for above-average tropical activity in the Atlantic. (In the past 10 years, all but two seasons have been above-average.) In addition, forecasters say the continuation of warmer sea surface temperatures influenced their outlook. NOAA will update its Atlantic hurricane forecast in August, just before the season's typical peak.
I was in florida as a cultural rep last year and went through all 3 hurricanes! Charley, Frances and Jeanne! The hurricane parties and gatherings we had are some of my best memories of my year in florida. It was basically an excuse to get wasted! ;D But it wasnt as much fun for all the florideans who lost their homes so spare a thought for them...
yeah my cousins at uni in haines city, just got bk for start of 2nd year and his whole residence was flattened, uni wouldnt put them up anywhere so had 2 fork out and try and get like 10 in a room at super 8 motel! oh the fun i was so scared when i was there with hurricane andrew, saw like 4 tornados around us, the thought of it still gets me! xxx
I know the parks got closed for a couple days throughout the three last year. For Charley, they looked for volunteers to help out at EPCOT (although apparently it ended up only being a dozen or so from the UK to do the whole park), but I don't think they can do that anymore. My old boss was in the Grand Floridian for Frances I think. They planned lots of activities to keep people busy and opened up the kitchens I think she said, but guests also had to stay in their rooms for some parts of it. You had to stay in your apts. in the Commons as well...but that just turned into a big drinkfest! I'm sure someone else who actually went through it can shed a little more light on the subject...I've only got what I heard on the phone when I kept calling my old roomies throughout the storms!!
