Hey there natalie! nice to meet you! :)

i dunno about getting a car, coz the americans drive on the right side of the road (which is the wrong side for me! lol). which wouldn't be too bad if the roads were smaller, but in the US they have all those enormous multilane highways. i would be so freaked out! :S imagine turning a corner and facing seven lanes of traffic heading your way!!! arrrgh!!! *gulp*

but, having said that, its gonna be soooo much more convenient with a car than without!

    hey natalie.
    you should go for it.
just go to www.ebay.com and search for cars.
i'm gonna buy me a car as soon as possible.
you're so much more flexible with a car.
won't have to wait for the walmart-buss or work buss.
and you don't have to rent a car for roadtrips :)
and afterwords, you can just sell it.

Natalie ive just thought about your licence, if you want a florida licence I belive the test to be easy but you have to give up your u.k licence. I'm sure ive read about this somewhere on hr in the past.

    Hey Natalie,

I'm afraid its true. THats why I'm not bringing my car. It would be alot easier to have your own vehicle, but its really expensive to have auto insurance in the States, plus you lose your homeland license. Its a bummer, but at least you ccan sit with us on the bus;)! lol.

Canadian-American is just basically a license swap and then you swap back when you come home...i believe. You can survive without a car. It sucks. But it's dealable. It sucks a lot of money out of you if you get a bad one. You'd better have a fair little bit saved if you want to buy one. I'm not sure I would buy a car off of Ebay.

w dont have to give up out driving licences if we rent a car though do we? also what is the deal on renting cars if you are under 25 as i thought you had to be over 25 to rent a car?

Different companies have different age rules. You may just have to pay a daily surcharge. You don't have to give up your license.

Natalie is says this on the FAQ part of this site:

Can I get a Florida drivers license or ID card?

Yes, everyone can. It is simply a matter of going to the DMV (located on the corner of South Orange Blossom Trail and Osceola Parkway) and presenting your passport and/or current license. The friendly folks there will give you the option of a Florida-only license (not valid outside of the state), a full-license, or an ID card. Choose the full license and you must say goodbye to your old license - they cut it up. If you are from outside of North America you will need to sit a driving test - but don't worry - it's a simple 10 minute exercise that anyone will pass. Cost: $20 for a license, $5 for an ID card

    Hey guys!
Getting a Florida driver's license is the smallest problem. I would think twice about buying a car here though. Florida is unlike a lot of places and it's hard to get a decent car that is affordable. Amlost everyone I know here with a used car has problems with it sooner than later. For me it was a drag here and my car is shit, but at least it drives me to the close by stores and work. Insurance can also be very expensive. You don't really need a car there anyways. You will have transportation to all parks, grocery stores and the mall is across the street. There is not much else than Disney. If you have a few grand to spare I say go for it, but if not just give it a good thought. I am speaking of experience, so it's just an advice. I didn't have a car when I was working for Disney and never missed not having one. You can get together with other people and rent one or with someone that has a car. I don't know of anyone that was leasing a car for a year, I don't even know if it's possible. Cars here are either financed for a longer period or you buy a car. Well you will have to see once you are there!...

    thats for that
i am seriously thinking about not getting one mow and just hareing one when i need it, which i think will be the best thing. do you know if you have to take the american driving test time to hire a rental car.

My understanding is that your own countries licence is valid to rent, but only for 6 months from arrival, after that you need to get a local licence., I think thats the same anywhere in the world (with the exception of driving in the EU of course if you have an EU licence)

I am sure someone will be able to give you a definite answer though :)
