Ok basically I seem to catch colds really easily and on the 2 times I have been on a plane I have especially been very ill and made up with a cold afterwards due to everybodies germs floating around in the air con. So I was wondering if anyone had any idea of any supplements I could take to boost my immune system before I fly out to florida, as obviously I dont wanna be ill for my first few weeks there, that would well and truly suck!

I already take Vitamin C supplements but does anybody know of any others I could take to decrease the chance of being becoming ill after flying?

Well Jess i have had a good look for you and cant find anything...anyone else got any ideas?

The main thing i find is to just stay really hydrated throughout the flight, but not alcohol. Best thing is water, fizzy drinks just fill you with Gas (and annoy the person next to you!). I also find it good to try and sleep for a bit on a long haul, helps you to feel fresher when you land.

I will admit though, i find the dry air in the plane gets to me a bit, shame you cant open a window!!

    J,
    xx

Thanks for having a look James, I’m sure I have read somewhere about a really good supplement to take but not sure now, maybe I should just go and ask at Boots tomorrow!

Echinacea is supposed to be good for the immune system...

    And the skin, apparently...

Used to work for me when I used to take it (stopped cos the bottle ran out and I got lazy)

Available as tincture, pills etc. :)

    Hi Jess...

If there's anything I've learned from all these Mens Health magazines, it's how to keep a healthy immune system.  Glad to hear that you take Vit C already. These long-haul flights can be particularly tiresome, boring and you're right - darn right quite nasty.  Regenerated Air (even through a filtration system) doesn't exactly make for pleasent thinking!!! hehehe.

Aswell as Vit C, you should really make sure that you get plenty of Vit A and Vit E too.

Vitamin A = Found in Chicken, Tuna, Egg Yolks etc
Vitamin C = Found in Fruit(Citrus), Broccoli etc.
Vitamin E = Found in Nuts, Wholegrain Bread, Veg Oil.

Remember it's ACE to stay Healthy! ;)

Ok, apart from eating properly, try to start a small fitness regime before you fly too. If anything, I'd say a good 6 weeks before you fly. I've started mine already!!!  I'm not saying get yourself to the gym any extra or start hiking up the nearest hill... well not almost... Brisk walking's kinda good because not only does it give you a cardio-vascular workout, it's exercising those legs, lungs etc too.

There's a fine balance between it all. (Well, that's my excuse!) But seriously, if you over do the exercise, you're not going to help matters... Just keep it subtle, but brisk!

Oh and one last thing... On board, take a jumper or fleece with you. (Those small blankets they give you aint that good) The temperature can get quite cool, infact I always end up freezing... Prolonged temperature highs and lows aren't conjusive for a healthy lifestyle. (Stress can play a part in lowering your immune system too.)

(It also catches alot of people out when they've spent the whole day in the parks in the heat... and then you come home, usually turn the aircon way way way down and then fall asleep... Same thing, your body doesn't like it.)

Finally, all those extra vitamins in either food or supplements doesn't just help protect your immune system it also helps keep your Hair, Skin & Nails in tip top condition too.  hehehe, just like being back at school isn't it.

    Hope that helps Jess.

    ;)

    70 Days to go!

    Hey Jess!
    Don't stress about it!

take it from an old trolley dolly(yes I was an air stewardess for 6 yrs) all u need to do is drink lots and lots of water! That isn't to say u can't enjoy a little something on the flight to celebrate!!!
Just chill out, move u're feet about regularly, and drink water!
I always take a 2 litre bottle of my own, as it's not always easy to get served.
Besides u'll be flying high on adrenelin!!! ;D ;D ;D And once u arrive believe me I won't let u sit down!!!

Berocca is excellent for boosting the immune system. I take it when Im humgover or can feel the cold coming on and it always works a treat. A tube of effervescent tablets costs about £4 from Boots or Tesco etc. All you do is dissolve the tablet in a glass of water and it turns into kinda into Tango! I really recommend them...but apparently it is not good for you to take them too often.
