    Hey guys!

As I am from Canada, i'm pretty sure i'll be riding down to WDW in June. I knew that I need a Florida License, plate and Insurances, but I was wondering if I need an appointment to get thoses? I was wondering as well if anyone know the price of the plates and driver licenses. As well do you have any insurances company that you recommanded?

    Thanks!

not sure about the plates but you can just turn up at dmv to get ya license however if you dnot want to spend all day in a queue tyou can make an appt before hand
http://www.dmvflorida.org/orlando-dmv.shtml gives you info on getting an appointment - i would assume plating info could be found by ringing/contacting them as well

I heard, since Im driving down as well, that you can keep your original plates. You still need to get a Florida drivers licence and insurance.

I'm looking around to see for sure.

As for keeping your plates it seemed to depend who you talked to at housing. Half my Canadian friends were allowed to keep their ontario/quebec (mainly...other provinces too of course!) plates and half were told they had to change to florida ones... I'm not sure how it's done now, if it's still luck of the draw, but don't give up your canadian plates too fast if you don't have to :)

Hi folks. My start date is Feb. 1st and I'm in the process of working all the driving issues out. My parents and I are driving down on Jan. 28th (keep your fingers crossed all that snow keeps away). I hope to have the license and insurance sorted out during that week so I'll keep everyone posted. I think I will be going with State Farm for insurance since that's our carrier right now. I'll keep in mind the issue about keeping Cdn. Plates. Some paperwork I've seen said you can't park at housing unless you have insurance but didn't mention plates. Other paperwork seems to say you need the plates. I guess I'll know soon enough.
One thing I did learn is that you should go to Service Ontario and let the OHIP people know you're going to be out of the country for the year. that way when you come back you don't have a 3-month wait for the insurance to kick in again.

Emilyrat, I know housing will give you a temporary parking pass until you have your insurance worked out. And you can't get insurance in the States usually until you can prove you live there. Which means you can't start that process until your start date.

Thanks for the info TinkIThink! I arrive on the 30th and was hoping to settle on the driving stuff on the 31st... but it seems to make more sense to wait and do it later in the week. Appreciate the tip

Hey, on the subject of driving... I'm from the UK, would you recommend I rent a car if I do get a place on the program? Or would it just be easier to use the buses/taxis?

If I did rent a car, do you know whether I need a Florida license? (I have a full UK license at the moment) Thanks :D

Car rental is only worth it for a max of about 2 weeks. Buses are provided to every Disney park and resort, and one to Walmart, every day. There is also a weekly bus to Florida Mall.

If you did want to buy a car, yes you would need a Florida license and Insurance for it.

Jean-Simon, I worked there last year, it was a HUGE pain, but I finally got it all sorted. Towards the end of my contract they started letting Canadians keep their plates, you just had to prove you had insurance coverage in the US, however I would recomend getting a florida licence as you may have issues using your Québec one because its not written in English. The place isnt too far away, like a 20 min drive or so, but id definitely try to keep yur Canadian plates, as its kind oof annoying to switch them all there and switch them all back when your contract is done. It is definitley a plus to have a car there, just have to be careful driving with all the tourists. I worked in canada food and beverage as well, so let me know if you have any questions I can help with!
