Im thinking that it would be A LOT more convenient to have a car if and when I get to america. I just have one problem. Driving on the right hand side of the road. Has anyone done this? Is it a problem at all? My uncles story of his first trip to florida has put me off. When he pulled out of the airport in his hired car onto the left hand side of the road!
haha my uncle did that too! i had a quick drive around the neighbourhood/estate there in our hire car and it was pretty fun. i guess it's a bit difficult at first, but if you've managed pass your driving test at home in the first place you've conquered bigger mountains! and there's a lot of automatic cars, which makes it a fair bit easier! as for the actual buying etc you may want to look in this forum: http://www.wdwip.com/smf/index.php?board=12.0 as there's a few topics on it there
I wouldn't let one story put you off. Though there are differences, such as turning right on a red and a severe lack of roundabouts, the roads are large and easy enough to navigate. You'll probably be driving an automatic, so one less thing to think about. General driving techniques of observation etc will be similar, but some things will have to be done in mirror, such as looking to your left to overtake rather than right. Obviously the gear stick will be on the other side (or may be attached on a stick connected to the steering wheel) but you'll be in 'drive' most of the time so shouldn't be too much of an issue. After the first couple of days all will be fine. If you have the resorces to use a car I'd definitely recommend it over any concerns over driving on the other side of the road. It will give you much more convenience, and over the duration of a program will save you LOTS of time in time waiting for busses, and indirect bus routes e.g. 45min return to Vista from Hollywood Studios via other housing complexes and Pop Century and Carribbean Beach resorts vs 10min direct route from Vista Way. The housing bus routes are circular rather than a line so the A bus will for example start at Vista, go to TTC, then backstage MK, pass the TTC again but not stop, pass near Vista but not stop, pass the Commons but not stop, stop at Chatham Square, stop at Commons, then stop at Vista. This system can be frustrating. If you wanted to go home to Vista from a day at MK from the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC) you'd go on quite a long route unecessarily.
Haha yes! Try to stay on the right side! I totally freaked when i was driving my friend's car - especially left hand turns, nearly crashed into the oncoming traffic! Yeah, I'm not such a hot driver.... But I successfully drive for 2 hours (despite some guy's clapped out van trying to run me off the road...grr) so it can't be that hard. It would have been sooo useful over there, and if i get this CRP, i might consider it, but i had no money and only 6months there before. Hiring a car is cheaper, a few of my friends did it for various trips. Although the i-ride is good and i think AJ mentioned free shuttles to places...
thanks guys. Hmmmm It sounds a lot better to buy a car over there! You might want to stay off the roads for the first couple of days when I arrive haha
LOL, i dont think driving in america is something to be worried about, if your not used to it then of course there is the big chance of making a mistake but once you know how to handle it, it should be fine, as my dad tells me. I want to drive out in america, but i was hoping to get my american drivers license, but i dont know if i will or not, just depends on how quick i can get it and how easy or hard it is. I just would hire a car, certainly not buy one, it is too expensive for me to hire with my UK license, also i dont have the two years experience required! You should buy a car if that is what you want to do, i wouldnt cause im only there for the summer but if you are there for the year then why not?
I was describing the free transport offered from housing to your work location, other parts of the resort, and nearby shops like Wal Mart in the post above. In another post I mentioned a free shuttle to the Lake Buena Vista outlets (opposite Wal Mart). Its meant for tourist shoppers and goes from the timeshare resort opposite Vista Way. It leaves about twice a day, and is useful if you want to get to Wal Mart a bit quicker as well, as Vista is the first stop on the Wal Mart bus, so it goes to the other complexes on the way taking time. You could take the free shuttle there, then take the housing bus back to Vista for example (though be very careful crossing the busy road without a proper crossing - techinically jay walking is illegal though) If you're there for a decent amount of time and can afford it get a car though - makes life much easier, its quicker and gives you the freedom to explore areas outside the bus routes with ease.
