Hey, I'll be in Orlando this summer (arriving may 27th) for the International College Programand have a few questions concerning transportations and days off.. So here's my problem.. I'm a big Dispatch fan, and as you may know, they will have a reunion concert on july 15th in NYC. I'm such a fan that I'm willing to take the plane and travel over 1000miles to go to see them live for a last time.. The problem is that its during the ICP. So here are my questions: How does the day off system works? If i wanna be off for like july 15th and july 16th, is it possible? when do i have to ask for this? would you advise me to get my plane tickets asap or i might not be able to leave that weekend? what is the cheapest way to get to the Orlando International Airport in the morning, knowing that I wont have any luggage? to get back? Ok so to sum up, i just want to know such a thing could work, and if so, what can i do in advance.. Thx in advance for helping me out!
As soon as u arrive and u are allowed on the Portal, request those days off. if they get denied, speak to your manager and see if they can sort it for you, or find someone you can swap shifts with. I was always able to get the days off i wanted, either by my manager sorting them, or by swapping/giving away shifts. They always got denied on the portal for some reason. also im not sure if there are buses that go to the airport, im sure someone else will be able to tell u this. However if u have to take a taxi, ur cheapest option would be with Kojak or Orlando, 2 drivers who serve cast members and give good discounted rates
I hear tho that the calling in sick system has changed, and apparently u can't call in sick on monday and recieve one point, then extend the time off for 3 days anymore. Apparently each and everyday counts as one point. So if ur sick for 2 days 2 points 4 days 4 days..
OMG! If I call in sick for 3 days, I would get a reprimand ??? If u give them something from the doctor do u still get points?
Could you request four days off in a row, then work constantly for however long? Just because my parents want to go away for their anniversary, and then have my sister stay with me (well, we'd stay in a hotel together), but I don't want her to be left on her own while I'm at work! Or could you request to do a particular shift, so you could start really early and be done by early afternoon? (She doesn't get out of bed til about midday anyway )
From what I was told when I was down there, CPs, ICPs, and all other such programs (except maybe the Cultural Rep program) have to be scheduled 5 days a week (you can always try to give these away). However you can ask for a Friday-Monday off to get your 4 days.
It would definitely make things easier to request an early shift. But if you want those days off, the Friday-Monday thing is the best idea. When you go on the portal, you have to make sure you book it off as a regular day off. That means that you want the 2 days you normally get off on those specific days. I never had a problem with it and got the days off I needed, but maybe it depends on where you're working at. I also somehow managed to cheat the system and I actually got 3 days off each week for 2 consecutive weeks! Don't remember how, but I didn't mind at all!
okay thx guys for all of your answers.. sounds like I might be able to make it! Can't wait to be there!
I'm probably going to do the same thing Most of my favourite bands ever tour the states, and the states only because, well, they're smaller bands, so I can catch some! Finally! I've already seen my second favourite group of all time (Les Cowboys Fringants! AAH!) and I can't see myself visiting Japan anytime soon to see another group I adore... but the US has got a lot to offer! I definately see myself taking as many back-to-back day-offs as I can
You can take a Mears shuttle to the airport, I think it's about $15.00. Kojak and Orlando go there for about $35.00, which is good if you are travelling with others. The Lynx bus also goes from the Outlet mall across the street from the Commons to the airport. It takes about an hour and a half, but it costs only $1.50! I used it a couple of times when I went to the airport to meet people. It's also the same bus that goes to the Florida Mall. Some ppl get three days off per week. In the Canada pavilion the merchies and attractions had the option of a 4/3 work week (four 10ish-hour shifts and three days off) as did assignors in Le Cellier. If you are there for a year you build up holidays and what not and are allowed one additional un-paid day off per month. ~ Jen
as far as I know aren't they more doing a reunion tour/festival or something rather than getting back together properly?? ooo i hope they do get back together properly that would be amazing!!! maybe them doing a reunion gig will make them realise they want to get back together properly - that's what happened with howards alias, one of my favourite bands! either way, it's good news, i would LOVE to see rage play!
Sweet I am SO doing a 4/3 split. If I can handle manditory 14 hour days at Mission:SPACE I can handle 10 hours in merch! Plus more time to play in the parks and the area (Universal, Busch Gardens, etc.!)
you get lots of points i guess :-\ I suppose theyve based it on how often people ARE genuinely sick over a period of like 3 months.. it might not stop people taking a one day sickie when they really are sick, but it will stop people taking the piss and taking 3 skiving days because it doesnt count anymore than 1 day.
i know i looked into it :-[ the coachella festival looks amazing aswell! i wish i could go! rage, bjork, DJ shadow, gogol bordello, damien rice.... i want to go! glastonbury in england also looks ace this year, but the last day of glastonbury clashes with my leaving date so i cant go! i will be jealous of all my mates in glastonbury, but on the other hand...i will be off to florida ;D
Gogol Bordello! Ah! Start Wearing Purple is of course one of my personal anthems ^^ And my friends would just kill me if I didn't see Rage Against the Machine and had the chance. I never thought in my life I'd get to see Bjork either! Whoever gets to that concert is definately lucky - oh, I can't imagine :O
