ok i have seen a member called Charli has posted something similiar so i thought i would start a topic. With August at the end of the week, it signals applications for ICP summer 09 can be sent. what i was wondering was whther someone who has gone through this process can enlighten us wanting to go as to what they expect to see from a CV and cover letter. My personal questions are more about what do you focus on? I have a list of theatrical hobbies and wasnt sure whether a description was needed for each of them to back up my interest in being a cast member. And do yummy jobs require a cover letter? cos i have heard different things. last question, do they need the full list of your qualifications or can they be shortened?i know many people from the UK must curse their schools for making them do 10 + GCSEs. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Hey there Freckles, I've been emailing Michele from Yummy Jobs today (who has managed to thoroughly confuse me but that's a different story!) and she says all we need to do is E-Mail our CV and a cover letter. My CV has all my qualifications but that's mostly because my GCSEs are better than my A Levels!! I even put in my course and university, though as "Pending" since I've only done 1 year so far. Other than that I'm as stuck as you! Thanks for starting a topic for it, that never occured to me! Charli
I do not have a confirmed place at university yet so do you think i should wait until i get my results before send off my CV and cover letter. I am not really sure what to write in my cover letter, do you think talking about why i like disney and how much i like it is taking it too far.
I suppose it depends on how you expect your results to go and your needed grades? If it's a bit touch and go then I'd wait and see, if not then apply anyway, you could always email later saying you withdraw your application? I'm not sure. Applications open between the 1st and 4th (As I said, Michele confused me!) but I don't know when they close. Results are around the 18th...?? You could probably send off your application the second you find out if you have a place!!
My results come on the 5th, im from scotland so we get our results earlier. I am scared to death because not only will it shatter my hopes for university, it may shatter my dreams for going to Disney.
In that case definitely wait until you have your results, you don't want to hurt any further chances by having to withdraw just after applying!! (I like how I sound like I know what I'm on about! lol) And it wouldn't shatter anything, just re-sit and apply the following year. Or do a different programme, such as the year long Cultural Rep one. There are always options. Not to mention whats-it-called, where you don't get either of your choices but you get a different uni that DOES accept your results. One of my friends at uni did that and she seems to love it, even though she would never have chosen there. Then there's the fact that you've probably done really well, got your grades, are off to uni and can apply to Disney. Look on the brightside (I can be positive, I have my results for the year already! But don't worry, I was like you a few weeks ago, first year doesn't count other than passing, which I'd done after my first semester, but I was still a complete nervous wreck!!)
Ye, i need to think positive, my conditions are not too high but there is one which is worrying me. Chemistry Summer School! I am absolutely dreading it because im not too good at Chemistry. I will wait until i get my results definetly, i only have to wait a week which in a way is not a good thing!
its the cover letter that is bamboozling me...not a clue what to put on it and i cant go to my careers tutor cos he is at uni. Charli i am going into my second year of uni, which one you at? there is always the chance to resit but i bet you have done excellently Leom. so what are you guys putting in your cover letter and cv? i have an objective and hobbies to look over currently....and are you keeping your CV down to one page?
Mines is over two. IN a cover letter it is best to tell them why you wish to apply obviously and a little about youself before the full CV. The CV should have only really the things that are relavent to Disney like in objectives and things like that but not in results, put all your results and qualifications no matter what. But you are not going to put in things like " I am not good with customer service or i do not get alone with the public." I am sure everyone has common sense though.
Freckles - I'm at Bangor University, in North Wales, where are you at? I think I'll ask my dad what he thinks, he does lots of employing and stuff, so maybe he'll have a better idea. I'll let you all know what he says!! I wonder if it's a bit like our personal statement, only more geared towards Disney than Uni, and including the whole "I want to work at Disney because..." stuff? And I think my CV is 2 pages. It might be less now because I put in my hobbies and I can probably swap that over to my cover letter...??? And things like "I can drive" is not relevant for America!! Charli
mine is currently one page. though very ver ybasic..its currently geared for media and drama jobs...so hopefully not that much tweaking. i am at huddersfield university. im thinking of putting down tha tti have 10 1/2 gsces the ngo into more details about my results from a levels onwards. nah you have to be over 23 and have been driving for at least 3 or 4 years to be able to insure a car i think. that would be great, cheers charli. if you have msn add me, it would be great to talk to another person looking to go out in summer 09!
My personal statement was the nightmare of my last year of school, i do not think i would compare a cover letter to that. Also i do not think you are limited to the number of characters you can use in a cover letter. I think i might start off my cover letter with "Once upon a time there was a boy, who had a magical dream that he would work for Disney one day and help Mickey and the gang to make dreams come true for millions of people." Is that just OTT.
Basically, with your CVs and covering letters, you're aiming to stand out from everyone else who's applying. My CV will cover two pages when it's finished (I've had to tweak it a bit, although the last time it was used was to apply to work in customer services) - there's not a problem with that. The important thing is to ensure that it does not run into a third page and that all the bits that make you stand out are on the first page - to make them want to read on. My problem will be with the covering letter. Are you guys gonna have the covering letter as the body of the email or as an attachment? I too am unsure what to write in there, other than elaborating on my last time working in Florida. I'm also waiting on A-level results, but I'm going to send my application off on Friday/Saturday anyway. I believe that I have done well enough to get into uni and if not I can always cancel my application - it's not like we're going to have a confirmed place on the ICP by August 15.
Well according to my parents the cover letter is JUST "why I want to go to Disney". So along the lines of "I've been going to Disney since..." "always been my dream" "Uni is perfect opportunity" etc etc. Making sure I quote "ICP 09". But more fluffy and over the top than that All of the hobbies and stuff goes into your CV, all that is irrelevant to the cover letter Charli EDIT - Argh! I'm starting to hate this cover letter LOL I'm obsessively "English Student"ing it, much to my mum's amusement/annoyance! You know, the sort of "That bit of the sentence needs a 'their' but so does that bit, and then I'd have too many 'their's and that's even worse!!!". Mum thinks I'm nuts, but it's not for nothing I got 80+% on my English coursework, I just drove myself up the wall while writing it! Ah well, CV will be easier to edit...right??! Hope everyone elses is less stressful
Hi guys! Another person struggling with the cover letter here! How long is it supposed to be? As a roungh guide? Any written work of mine is always ummmm... concise ;D and I'm having difficulty figuring out what else to put in. Will 3/4 of a page do? Its only about 1/2 a page at the moment but I've still got a few bits left to write which should bring it to about that length. Nicola x
Yes, if it is too long then they will probably lose interest and all they need to know is your dedication for the job.
Damn. My CV is now 3 pages long. But I can't see anything to take back out of it!! I'm listing all of my qualifications since I'm quite proud of my GCSEs and my A Levels are rather crap. I'm listing every bit of work/volunteer I've ever done (as most of it is working with children!) and I was told to put in a bit about my hobbies etc. Grrr. There's nothing else IN THERE! Apart from contact details, also pretty essential!!
Well my Dad sorted it out for me, so not only is it now only 2 pages, it's also zooming off across the internet to Yummy Jobs. Argh, can't believe I've actually applied!!! Fingers crossed for everyone now! Good luck all Charli
I've got another question! Do you think it's worth saying what sort of role you are interested in in your cover letter/CV? Nicola x
