Looking for some information and advice from people who have brought their cars with them to Orlando. I want to take my car with me when I come down in June from Toronto. I'm in the CRP so I'll be there for a year. I have a few questions about the upfront costs when you arrive. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

How much does it cost to get a florida licence and plates? Should I even bother?
    Is Insurance very expensive there?
Can anyone recommend a good company to get it from?
Sould i bother with AAA or would CAA still cover me in Florida?

    Hey people,
I to am looking for information regarding running a car.
I am from the UK with a full UK driving license held for over 2 years.
Would i be OK to drive in the US if i had access to a car?
Would i just need to take a test and obtain a license?
What sort of license would I need?
How would i go about insurance stuff?
Any other stuff i need to know
Any info would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks, Damon

Been doing a bit of research to get myself down there. It shouldn't cost anymore than 160ish (not counting any transaction fees/taxes) to register my vehicle (thats for basically any car). That cost is paid when you arrive (after getting insurance of course) and is good until the month of your birthday, then you pay somewhere between 25-45ish before the taxes/fees to renew for another year. Dosn't seem to be any way around paying yearly fees even if you're only going to have part of a year.

Insurance is another (more expensive) story. Insurance for me was quoted around $623 for 6 months (assuming then I'd have around 1200 for a full year).

Then it costs nothing (aparently) to change over your liscense, and then theres your gas and other charges like that.

Basically it's looking like I'm going to have to pay close to 1500 USD when I first get down there, and then I should be good until March where I'll have a $50 or less payment for registration, and I shouldn't have to more than an extra month or two of insurance if I extend.

I've been looking around and my friend who was at Disney before is helping me. For my veh which is a 2004 Civic, i will have to pay approx 879$ for six months for insurance which is crazy because the coverage is very slim on top of that. If you want to make it cheaper, don't get the Comprehensive coverage but on a car which i paid lots of money for, i need to get the Comp coverage. If you want a quote on your veh, just search for insurance in Orlando on the net. You can even try Essurance.com. The other thing is that you will need to safety your vehicle when you get there as well. The biggest pain about it is that you can't get into the commons with it unless you have Florida plates, sometimes they may issue a temp. pass to go in with plates from your country. I'm still pondering what to do, not sure if i want to drive my car or buy a cheap car out there, we'll see!

I quite fancy getting a car when I'm out and I'm pretty sure I could afford it... Just wondering though, is it really going to be worth it? Is it not a few thousand dollars I could keep and use on other stuff and maybe rent a car if I wanted to go on a long haul trip... I guess I wont know until I get out there... :-\

I thinking the same thing. I'm going to fly down, see how it goes. Try renting a car if i need one.(I'm over 25 so should be cheap). If I decide i want my car i can arrange to bring it down to Florida later. It just seems like so much money to put out when we only make $7/hr.

i'm planning on trying to get my driver's license but no way am I getting a car. far too expensive. insurance can be a nightmare if under 25... luckily i turn 25 out there though but I think with the work load there's no reason to get one. Plus I have my parents to drive me around if need be :)

If I had the chance to drive my car down from Canada I would have. For most of my program I rented a car. Yes a rental. It was very expensive, about $26/day or $130/week without insurance (250 with), but it was worth every penny. Sure being in a tipped position helped, thats where most of my money went, but having a car is priceless. To and from work, restaurants, attractions, nice new cars, convertables, SUVs.... Dont have to worry about it breaking down, etc.. It was a good time!

So John, you defenitely recommend driving if it's possible? Even if you figure that insurance will be somewhere around 1800 US for 12 months?

Yup, :) no question about it. It's an experience of a lifetime; you will want to explore outside of the bubble, there is just so much..... It is expensive, but it is worth it.
