i am planning on bringing my laptop with me for the year. they said in the presentation that there was hookup in the apartments if we brought our own. i was wondering what type of hookup it was? like is it dial-up where we log on and use the phoneline or is it cable or something and will i have to buy a special modem to get access? any advice would be very helpful! thanks!

All you need is a network card and the wire (ethernet) or a wireless card.

You can use any of those.

I'm gonna buy myself a laptop when I come to Florida as well....but how is the laptops in Wallmart like? I was thinking about getting one by Internett...like Apple or Dell, because I've heard they're great.. but if you can get a good functional laptop at Wallmart, maybe that isn't such a bad idea?!

the desktop im using right now is DELL! Its a new one which i purchased through Internet about 5 months ago! Dell computers are great, I tried to look at those Dell laptops and to compare those in Walmart, there're couple of Laptop in Walmart are defo cheaper!!! and i think we can only purchase them Online!

but again, its all depends on what kinda computer you need! ;D

Why do you wanna buy yourself a new laptop, if you allready have one?
I'm buying the laptop, mostly because I've heard it's so difficult to get hold of the computers at Commons, and it's also nice to e-mail and chat with your friends back home whenever you want to :) And of course, since I don't have my own, it's better I buy one in US in stead of buying a lot more expensive one in Norway.

its becos the one im having in my room is a desktop, not a laptop!!
so i only need a laptop for a year, just as you said, its easier to keep contact with friends by emails or instant chats! Also, to transfer all my digital photos!!!
So i dont really need a super laptop, but of cos, i wont waste $$ on a crap one either! ;D
it should be something worth buying! hahaa

huh? Internet Access is free in our apartment, isn't it?? I think its included in our rental fee!!
but as i heard, it blocks most of the things like ftp, torrents.. etc with the firewall.. and you can call the company up to unblock it but you have to pay another extra 10-15 bucks!..

i aint sure but thats what i heard! ???

if you want wireless you need to buy a wireless router that is compatible with your computer and network speed

I bought a Dell laptop before I left home and I absolutely love it. I've always been really happy with Dell and had no problem spending a little extra money on a computer that I knew would last the year and if it didn't Dell would fix it.

However, having said that. A friend of mine bought a laptop from walmart and I think she only spent about $400 or so on it and it seems to work for her fine. I'll have to get some more details on exactly what she paid and what she got.

Yep, internet is included in our rent. Our connection is in the living room, so it's just convienient to sit on the couch and use the computer. I was going to buy a wireless router so I could use it in my bedroom, but I don't really see the need now. And, yes, I do think that some things are blocked. I know that we've tried to download music and can't do it. I haven't had trouble doing anything else. There are a couple of wireless networks down here that my computer has located. One is free and one is not. I was going to see if I could download some music while connected with the free one, but I haven't had a chance yet.

    see you all soon,
    Sandra :)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's right. Basic internewt for surfing and email etc is free, but for torrents and things you have to pay to get it unblocked (I plan to do that if the net in my appartment isn't already).

  15. wow thats so awesome! I am TOTALLY going to buy a laptop....

If our laptop has a wireless connection do we need to buy a wireless card to match the connection at disney? or should the computer already have it...??????

If there's a wireless connection and you already have a wireless card in your computer then I wouldn't think so (but I'm not expert!).

okay i know my laptop isn't wireless which is fine. i am curious, can we just turn on our computer the first day and plug in a wire and surf or do we need to buy the wires or anything before getting access?

and can we seriously not download any music at all??? i think i'd go through withdrawls with no more downloading! :'(

It works much like a university connection does, so if you have an ethernet card in your laptop and a cat 5 cable (thats the thick cable, rather the thin phone one you get for home), then yes, you can just plug it in and go like you would in your uni room.

If you pay the 10-15 $ a month charge they will unblock the ports for you so you'll be able to use downloads and bittorrent and the like. That's what I plan to do as the chare is quite low so even if no one else in the room wants to chip in then I can afford in myself.
