Hey Disney Fans! I know I'm getting way ahead of myself, but I was just wondering about a cell phone for when we are in Florida for the year. Does anyone know if we'd be able to sign up for a postpaid contract style account for the time we're there or would we only be eligible for prepaid phones? Also, any ideas about international calling on cell phones??? Again, I realize I'm getting way too excited but it never hurts to get a little information
If you do a search of the forums you'll find most of the answers you're looking for. But in short: yes you can get both post and pre-paid pay as you go and contract phones and sim cards. Note that contracts are often for longer than 12 months and cost more than you need though. As for international calling, it'll probably cost more, but the prices would depend on your phone. Alternatively, get/take a laptop and use skype.
Skyype works really well for international calls and such, but I plan on modifying my plan to be able to have my cell down there - also I find phone cards work well for international calling - I used them a lot for my ICP summer!
I'm going to look into this a bit more if I'm accepted. When I was on the ICP I did what Shayna described, basically just used my number from Canada but got a North America plan. It's more expensive and also, you don't have a local number, so if people want to call you, it'd be long distance for them. So I'm thinking I'd like to get either a plan or pay as you go for the CRP.
Yeah in '06 I just got a phone on the cheap with a pay-as-you go plan. More than anything I used it for texting, and just used Skype or my long distance calling card to call home. Texts were cheaper than calls, so I could make a dollar stretch a long way when making plans and what not in that respect. Worked well enough for me! Really depends how often you'd use your cellie though, and what you'd use it for (i.e. local calls, or both local and international). I definitely preferred at least having a local number, then my managers could contact me easily on slower days when they wanted me to come in later or something, not to mention just touch base with fellow CM's!
fo sho! I will change and have a local number def and then deal with the international stuff another way... skype or phone cards! I wanna be able to have a local number to keep in touch with people and make plans!
I'm definitely going to want a local phone number so we can all keep in touch while we're there, for get togethers and after work plans and such. When I was there in o6 for the ICP, I didn't even have a cell phone but I know I couldn't do that for an entire year!!! Another thought, if we all decide to get cell phones we should go with the same provider b/c i know a lot of them have unlimited same network calling... that would save us some money b/c I imagine we'll be calling each other a lot b/c we're all obviously going to be great friends!!!
Sounds like an excellent plan! We'll have to look into plans closer to the time. I'm using FIDO right now, and I have unlimited Fido to Fido calling, not sure if they have it in the states though...
I have Fido too Matty! And I def think it's a good idea... I didn't have a cell phone either for ICP but I dont think I could do it again! We gotta have them to organize plans like you said Jackie We'll definitely have to look into it when it gets closer!
For the ICP I had a net10 disposable. We all had it so it was all good. Only cost $30 as well with 30 minutes with it.
so with this net10 disposable you could talk to those 10 as often as you'd like? I don't know if 30 minutes aside from that would be enough for me... my nickname in kindergarten was the chatterbox and Im not sure things have changed much
Well net10 is the phone company. You got 30 minutes with the phone when you got it. After that I usually got $30 worth of credit which got you 300 minutes. You just get phone cards from Wallgreens next to Vista.
ok 300 minutes sounds much more reasonable, i didn't understand correctly the first time. And having the cards so nearby is a definite plus. I'm just so excited to go. I've been counting down the days until my family leaves for our New Years Disney vacation and today is 150!!!! It may sound like a lot, but I started this count down at more than 200 haha.
I do countdowns that far in advance too! haha! I'll probably look into celly plans closer to the actual time... I use my cell a lot to call and text... i'm going to need an extensive one... plus I talk to my fam like everyday lol
