Hi Everyone, I've been looking through medical insurance plans and cant seem to find a good one, is there any other Canadians out there that can help me out and let me know which plan they went with? that would be great and a big help! Thanks! Heidi
Hi Heidi! i haven't bought my medical insurance yet but i've looked at a few prices and think i know what i am going to buy. it is RBC Travel Insurance, their Classic Medical package for 126 days is around $230. it is travel insurance bought through certain travel agencies only i believe. i used to work at an agency and it is the company we used and i never had any problems with them. also i don't know where in canada you live but i'm in ontario and was told that i have to get an extension on my OHIP since i will be out of the country more then 212 days. i am going next week to some office or something to fill in papers and stuff and it covers some costs in case of emergency in florida. i hope some of that blabbing can help you a bit. Erin
Hey, I haven't decided on my insurance yet, but I live in Ontario and went last week to work out my OHIP. It's really simple, I filled out a form that said I was going to be out of country for 1 year, gave a copy of my letter from Disney that gave my dates of employment and signed a few forms. Now I'm just waiting for my new health card that will be good for the entire time that I'm in Orlando, plus a little extra. They told me if I decide to do some travelling afterwards to just let them know a bit ahead of time (I think there's a form you send in) and they'll extend the OHIP coverage for a little longer. When we come back to Ontario we have to get another new health card, but at least we won't have to be reapplying for the benefits! Nothing to do with insurance...but useful information non-the-less!! ;D Charlene
I'm going with Blue Cross....so far they have the best coverage I've seen so far for $230. They cover everything and are very reliable....I always go with them everytime I go away. OHIP is good but the catch is you have to pay for the expenses then they reimburse you after....so if you don't have money you're screwed. Anyways...just my advice to you. Brigitte
hey bigitte, I went and had my ohip extended because if they find out you have been out of the counrty for longer than 4 months with out notifying them of your absence they will cancel your coverage.....then when you get back to canada after your year there you willnot have ohip for 3 months then you have to go in and renew your ohip and hope they accept you, mean while by advising them of it they send you a form at the end of your absence that you fill out and send in then they reinstate your old ohip card right away. the ohip office in ottawa is at 75 Albert. they onpen at 8:30 am mon-fri
Just a warning...the insurance I got was a major name one (can't remember for the life of me though!!!) and they told me that I just took the card with me and that would be all I needed...no cash. NOPE!!!! The one time I tried to use it, it was going to cost me $125 just to SEE the doctor becasue they didn't accept my insurance. I said no way and left. Not sure if it was just that place (the walk-in clinic in Lake Buena Vista near the Crossroads...they have a little sick bus that will come pick you up!! Picked up me and a girl from Vista when I went!!) or if it was my insurance because luckily I never needed it again. Only go to the Dr. if you are dying!!! Not like here. I think it toughens you up really...ha ha. Shan
