Bugs in Florida?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Princess Tessa, Jan 28, 2006.

  1. Hey all, I've heard about the "Love Bugs" that flock to Florida every September, I'm fine with that.
But I have aracnophobia QUITE badly and I was just wondering if Florida has alot of spy-ders, or if any of them are poisonous...

    Thanks!

There are some spiders but nothing as bad as we get here in Vancouver. They're pretty big but they're the harmless-looking ones with the little round bodies and the spindly legs -- no ginormous scary bad-ass wolf spiders with fangs crawling up through drainpipes like we get here! If you can survive among the BC bugs you'll be fine!

BUT... you know how at home if there are cockroaches in your house it must be because you live like a pig and you've done something to attract them?? Well, in Florida it just means you left your patio door open!!

well, there are spiders, some of them quite scary! there's spiders that jump around and some of them are actually poisonous...not deadly, but some of my friends that were bitten said it hurt quite a bit...sorry!

Did see a few spiders. Cockroaches were definately worse! I got one in my bathroom the one day and after spraying it about a million times I had to call security to come around and get it (bearing in mind my wardrobe was in my bathroom and I was in a towel at the time so quite embaressing all around). There were also mini frogs that freaked me out. They camped out around my apartment and the one day one found its way in to my bathroom (not sure what was so nice about my bathroom mind).

I do actually like the lizards but when frogs are the size of quarters they freak me out! I dunno I think it was because I was scared one would land on me and go in my hair and I wouldn't be able to get it our. Totally irrational I know but hey

The first time I went to Florida I had no bug problems whatsoever.
But this summer I did. I had many huge spider bites, which I've no clue when I got, but they where a pain in the ***... and mosquitos flocked to me like flies to horse-s**t, you know what I mean...
I had to get a really heavy-duty bug repellent that stunk (probably cuz of the DEET), but it worked like a charm...

Awww... I remember the frogs! They were much cuter than the lizards, I thought. We had a pet one that my roommate named Herbert! He used to sit by the light outside our door and wait for us to come home every night!

I know it's completely off topic but when I was reading your post the word "goossh" I read as a good style Gorsh (or however he says it) lol (I'm a Goofy fan and I guess I'm getting into the whole Disney thing more and more each day lol).

On topic I think the thing that'll get to me the most would be the cockroaches, I can't say I've ever lived in a place where they're a problem...

  11. hopefully we'll all be able to help each other out :) someone can get rid of my spicers and I can get rid of people's frogs and roaches :p hee hee

You guys will have pest control coming to your apt.'s every now and then and they spray out everything so it kills the bugs! Sometimes pest control can be scarier than the bugs though lol I remember my roomie waking up one time and this pest control guy was like leaning over her bed...yuck!!!! Anyways, I am also totally aracnophobic, can't see movies about them or fake spiders and let alone real ones, I freak out. All my friends know and I would punch them in the face if they ever tried to scare me with it. I never had spiders in my apt. in Florida ( thank god ) and we only had roaches twice. Once it got killed from that pest control spray and I just had to get it from the floor and throw it out ( which was bad enough ) and the other time my roomie was alone and the roach was in our room, trying to run under our beds and my roomie got it right in time ( she is so brave lol )...now that I am back in Florida I had a roach once in my old apt. and it was huge. I needed half an hour until I had the courage to kill it. Now in my new apt. we have more problems with ants than roaches....at least ants are tiny! I remember only getting spider and moscito bites in Orlando when we would sit outside on the grass during the throw ins. And those bites could get sooo huge! At least I never saw them sting me....If you go to the Keys in the summer definitely take moscito spray with you!
As for the geccos, I love those!!! They are sooo cute....
Now that I heard there are huge, ugly, scary spiders in Vancouver my dream of living there just blew up :'(

    Julia

PS: For anyone aracnophobic.....do not go to Animal Kingdom to see "Bug's life" in 3D or whatever the name is, it freaked me out!

  15. ooooh! I'm SSOOOOO glad we have a pest control service!

I saw the Bug's life 3D movie in California Adventure - TRAUMATIZED ME!!!!

As for spiders in vancouver - yeah we can get some pretty big ugly ones or ones with HUGE bums.....SOOOO scary!
But on a good note - none of them are poisonous! SO that's nice

Oh my god my roomie was laughing her ass off when I told her how "Bug's life" scared me, at least I see there are other people out there that get traumatized, too :-* my roomie was like "My 4 years old brother saw it and loved it" ....well maybe that is because he is a GUY and when you are a kid you think bugs are funny I guess.
I am so upset about Vancouver having huge spiders, I loved Vancouver and I so wanted to move there or to Calgary and now I don't wanna go anymore *sob* Life is not fair!!!!

i loved it, too! but i remember how the 2 girls i went with freaked out! i have no problems with spiders on tv or in pictures, but in real life i don't need them too close to me!

well, julia, so maybe you'll have to move to quebec now! matt's still in montreal? he'll be more than happy to see you! haha!! you won't have to be afraid of any spiders then! haha!! but i'm sure it won't be as bad as in florida...

oh no i dont get many spiders in my house i have an electrical repellant its cool
as for cockroaches i hate them only ever seen 1 in my life do you get less if your on 2nd or3rd floor??

If you keep your apartment tidy, empty the trash every day and keep dirty clothes off the floor, expect less bugs...
As for 2nd and 3rd floor being a "bug repellant", don't count on it! I've lived on all 3 and altitude doesn't matter. If you keep the apartment cool/cold, bugs'll be less likely to come in.
I never considered bugs a problem in Florida though, except for all my bites, and I hate bugs!

But check out the creepy bastard that crawled on my leg outside Disney University..... eeeew
