So... combine the fact that I'm a bookworm and that I have never been to Florida/any Disney park, I've decided to read up on Disney/Florida so that I'm not completely clueless when I get there!

My local Smiths had a total of three books: One which was too thin (;D), one which I've bought (Eyewitness Travel: Walt Disney World Resort & Orlando) and one which I thought was a bit too expensive to buy if it turned out to be rubbish... It was the unofficial guide to Disneyworld.

So, you're all experts on here- does anyone know if that Unofficial Guide is any good? Or can you recommend some books? Bear in mind that I like them long and thick tehehehehehe!

I suggest you invest in The Complete Walt Disney World 2008.

Because one of our trainers, Brandon, is on the cover in Trolley Show!

Inside it's pretty good too hehe. Lots of photos and some interesting bits of trivia and quizzes and things it is actually a pretty awesome guide.

Aside from guides if you're looking for general Disney literature I can highly recommend Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow. It's brilliant and although I suggest buying it (amazon have it), you can even download it for free here http://craphound.com/down/download.php - it's his official site so it's legal.

Also, Kingdom Keepers but you probably already know that one :)

Then The Imagineering Way and it's partner book The Imagineering Workout.

    There's loooads.
The Gospel According to Disney is interesting as a general read as well as from a theological pov.

Let me know if you find any good ones!

  4. The Unofficial Guide to WDW is good, cited a lot on scholarly work. A part from that the same as Beth has mentioned below me :)

is that the one you mean hel? if so that's pretty good, what i've read of it anyway. and we've had a couple of editions, so my dad obv trusts them.
and let's put it this way: our disney holidays are planned more thoroughly than parts of the third reich, and they're much more efficient (and usually a bit less violent)

(DISCLAIMER: i'm not a nazi, i hate hitler too yada yada, it's just a joke we make against my dad)

Yep thats the one Matt (you plagaristic Nazi!) From what you've all said, it sounds like it's decent! I might fork out the 20 squid for it when I get paid on Friday! Michelle- "Orlando and Disney for Dummies"... you trying to imply something?? Haha joking :p I think it sounds perfect for me though!

I hadn't heard of some of the others, will have to look them up! Maybe my library will have some... it will be the first time in about 3 years that it actually stocks a book I want to read!

I got the unofficial guide and it's awesome. It's made for guests rather than cast members but i'll be taking it with me to Orlando. It's like a 900 page Bible which also covers other parks and shopping outlets.

    Well worth £9.09

We always use The Brits guide to Orlando and Walt Disney World.
It's a really good book, and focuses on lots of things to do in orlando as well as walt disney world.
They bring a new one out every year, and we have used them whenever we go.
It has lots of good hints and tips in their too :)

I have also read a book called Mousetrap: Memoir of a Disneyland Cast Member.
It's really good, and is a nice insight into what working for disney entails.
It is written by a guy who worked in Disneyland in Cali but is still worth a read.
I don't know where you'll be able to get it from in the uk as I got my brother to get if for me when he was over in the states.
But if you do find it, I highly recommend it :)

    Hi!
Hey! I'm reading one at school called Disney: Be Our Guest, its really good and interesting, its mainly about how Cast Members have to behave or what they do to make guests their day magical. Maybe there's not to much diference between the other ones about cast members and this one, but its too worth reading.. just for the record, also some extra disney facts!

    good luck!

It's not a theme park book but 'Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination' by Neal Gabler is an amazing book. I'm in love with Walt, and this book is so detailed and amazing i love it.
It's even where I found out Walt Disney's dad Elias was born in Canada!! wooooo!

i started reading my sister's book about walt and fair play, his dad sounds like a right nutter! in fairness, walt was a bit of a nutter too, with his crazy business ideas that never ever led to anything, obviously ;)

I've ordered that "Be Our Guest" book you rec'd Robmad... it might help me understand the difference between a waitress and a cast member hehe! Cos I know there is a quite big difference from what all of you have said about your visits!
