Hi, I've auditioned twice for DCL but got turned down both times on account that they couldnt really fit me in in their current shows. Bummer! However, its always been a dream of mine to work for Disney and I may settle for the ground floor until Tinkerbell decides to sprinkly some pixie dust my way. SO...OPTIONS: Im currently looking at the International Program but the pay scale scares me a little. I have obligations that I could probably not meet with the IP. Can anyone provide any information on payrates and contract lengths for DCL, so I can see how the 2 options compare? I have an Honours degree in Psych so I could possibly apply for work as a youth counsellor, or worse case, I could work as a server. (or servant lol). Can working as crew help me in any way to become a performer on DCL (making contacts, etc,,,)?

Thanks to all those who reply!

    Hi!

I worked in Merchandise with DCL for a year. Most contract lengths on the ship are 6 months on with 2 months off, although entertainment may vary from that. The pay on the ship is definitely better than on land although that is mainly due to the fact that you don't pay tax and don't have a lot of time to off to spend the money you make! I actually worked out one day that we were getting paid roughly the same as in the parks but it seems like more due to the previous reasons! I did manage to save quite a lot over two contracts.
I guess it can also depend on what ship you are on. I was on the Wonder where you don't get to see too many places so don't spend as much money but I would imagine if you were on the Magic you would probably spend more as you get to see more ports.
You would definitely make a lot of money working as a server. My boyfriend was a server and he made 3 or 4 time what I did every month in tips!
DCL do try to tell you that it is easy to move departments on the ship, but I found out it really depended if your face fit, if you know what I mean! You definitely get the chance to apply for other jobs after you've completed one contract but it really does just depend on needs at the time. You could get lucky. But as for moving into entertainment, I'm not so sure, that's a whole different department. But you may get lucky and get some good contacts but it is very hard work, especially being a server so don't be disappointed if you do go on there and don't get anywhere. ::)

    It is great fun though!

Hope this helps a little. :)

    Laura. :)
