    Hi guys,
Sorry to ask another question about money! I was just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to transfer money from your American account into your British account? I still have my interest free graduate overdraft until July 2012 and I'm wondering how easy it would be to pay it off from my American account if I maxxed it out before I left to allow me emergency spending money at the beginning. As I dont come home until at least the end of August, I would need to pay it off before I got home to avoid paying interest on it.
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks xx

You can transfer money internationally. I bank with suntrust, and the rules for internatinal money transfers with them is that it will cost you a set rate of $50 per transaction. So you could send home 100 and it would cost you 50 to do so, or 1000 and it would cost you 50... not sure if their rates have changed in the past year or so though. Other banks might be different and charge you a percentage maybe.

I know you can do moneygrams at Walmart too, where you put money in a Walmart, then someone picks it up at the post office (or somewhere similar) at home and pays it in for you. Would save you the $50. You also get a cheque book with your Suntrust, so could send a cheque.

But, yeah, like Linsey say's, the only way I can think of to go straight from bank to bank, is to wire it.

You have to open the Suntrust yourself as well. The pay card you get given at the start that your wages go into is pretty useless really.

they give you a pay card now? that sucks, we used to just be given a cheque that you cashed or paid into your bank account.... I'm planning on skipping the presentation by partners and I advise others to do the same. Don't bank with them! Go to suntrust!

Yeah, it's handy in that your wages go straight into Partners, but you don't actually have an account, just the card with all your money on it. You can use it as a debit in Walmart and the like, but you get charged at pretty much every ATM except at work, and if you have any bother, you have to specially request the bus to get to the branch. Plus, it doesn't actually have your name on the card, so you can't use it to buy anything online lol. It's really pretty useless!

As soon as I got tips, I paid them into Suntrust so I could at least get a little bit of interest. Plus if I forgot to transfer my money, the Suntrust card works in UK ATM's, Partners doesn't...luckily I didn't anyway lol.

this is easy enough to do but yes you will need to open up a "real" bank account with someone like Suntrust so that you get an actual checking account (current account) you can then go into the branch and do an international transfer straight from your american account into your UK account that your wanting to credit payments to, you just need a few details from your UK bank (like the IBAN number or the SWIFT code etc --- go into your bank at home and ask them for all the details that you would need and keep a note of them)

You will be expected to pay for this however - may be a flat fee or it might be a percentage of the amount you are transfering, im not sure but its unlikely to be free of charge. also remember that the transaction will start as dollars and change into pounds and therefore you need to just keep an eye on the exchange rate so that your aware of how much your actually paying in!!!

Not an issue tho, will just take a little bit of organising!!

I went to transfer money bank to bank but was shocked at the fee they wanted to charge me, so I payed some money into my paypal account and then transferred it out into my UK account.
