http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/orl-bk-disneydeath041206,0,441409.story?coll=orl-news-headlines John who used to vist these forums often and got down there a few weeks ago sent me this link tonight... who thinks theres gonna be a few changes to the ride?
LOL I don't really like it anyway...even the teacups make me feel ill... but these incidents are making me slightly scared of it...
That's pretty crazy! Who would've thunk it could be so risky. Mind you it probably isn't so bad if you're healthy, but what if you've got some unknown condition or something? I hope Disney makes some precautionary changes, its never a good thing to see...
well, i really like the ride and i'm shocked that something like that happened again...hope it won't be shut down... it's weird that the woman's german, but it hasn't been on the news here (yet)...
Well, the first death was caused because the child had an enlarged heart. It wasn't in any way due to ride malfunction. The child didn't know he had the heart condition - but if he had, he wouldnt have gone on the ride. The ride was checked immediately after that incident and found to be operating correctly. It's closed currently to see if it was another ride malfunction. We'll wait and see, I suppose. KC
I got the experience of riding it this past February and I LOVED IT!! Was alittle freaked out by the "BARF BAGS" on the ride but when you can get past that...........it's GREAT!! I was actually thinking it was pretty short???? Call me crazy!!
I highly doubt the death had anything to do with a ride malfunction. The problem is that the ride is supposed to simulate space flight, which is not a pleasant experience despite what the world sees on TV. No I haven't experienced it personally, I'm finishing my degree in Human Physiology (how the body works) and one of the classes we are just finishing (I write the final on Saturday) is entirely about the effects of earths gravity on the body compared to the effects of microgravity in space. We spent alot of time reading NASA research studies. Bottom line, space flight (or simulated space flight) isn't always pleasant and isn't safe for everyone. The main reason that ride would cause death is that our bodies are so well designed to compensate for earths gravity and do so even after it is removed. If anyone is interested this is what happens: our legs are designed to push blood back up to the heart with a great deal of force because they have to work against gravity, otherwise the blood would pool in our legs. This involves valves in the veins of your legs to prevent back flow and constant muscle contractions to squeeze blood out of our legs so it can't pool. Under microgravity conditions (space missions are not zero graviy they are microgravity, I'll explain the physics if anyone wants later) the body continues to be very effective and pushing blood out of the legs, but now it has no force to opposing it, which means the upper body (thorasic and cranial) are over filled with with blood, which raises blood pressure in the heart, the chest and the head. Someone with already elevated blood pressure or preexisting heart problems is not going to be able to handle this additional increase well. Blood pressure pushes on blood vessel walls and the heart making it possible for these vessels to rupture or making cardiac failure possible. Bottom line if you don't know the condition of your body, assume you have a problem. Disney can't be expected to put people through as extensive testing as NASA does when it choses people to go into space. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the German woman had high blood pressure, but just didn't know her body well enough. And I would anticipate that the increase blood pressure caused either a ruptured blood vessel in her brain (hemoragic stroke) or in her heart (heart attack). Oh, and if anyone plans on riding Mission Space and you end up with a feeling of nausea and dizziness don't assume the worst. That has nothing to with your cardiovascular system ... and actually you can do an eye test to detemine if you are someone suceptible to motion sickness. Sorry that was so long ... can you tell I love my Degree? *sigh* So sad when people die unexpectantly, can you imagine. She's in this magical place and never saw it coming. :'(
its horrible ..cos when your in disney you think that nothing bad can touch you...so it is really horrible when something happens...my parents and my sister went to wdw just after the rid opened before there were any deaths..my dad has a bad heart and my mum high blood pressure...they took the advice of the notices and did not ride!!! thank goodness, i think some times can think these notices are just disney being over cautious and possibly in some cases they are but with good reason.. however my sister did go on and said it was amazing!!!! i wanna go on so i hope it will all be good. my thoughts are with the family tho...it is certainly easy to hav such afflictions and not know...heck my dad never even knew about his first heartattack till he had a second months later
Saw it on the NATIONAL NEWS last night!!! I was surprised to see it to be honest!! I realize that DISNEY is not above these things happening but it still stuns us all to hear about it!!! NO MATTER how this poor woman died..........my prayers go out to her family and friends and I truly hope that people will TAKE HEED when the ride says..........DO NOT RIDE IF........................ DO NOT RIDE!!!!
after 2 days it was on the news here yesterday...just a small report...i thought it would be bigger here since she was german and it was disney... as much as i love the ride, maybe disney should never have opened it if there's such a big risk involved...i mean there is a lot of people out there that don't know that they have heart problem or high blood pressure...and you can't make people to go to the doctor before they go there just to make sure. but i guess there's also a people out there that know they got these problems but just don't care thinking nothing could happen...
Here's an article from The Mirror. Ive not been on it yet but I presume there are lots of safety notices at the start warning people no to go on it if they have a health condition that could be aggravated by the ride SECOND DEATH IN A YEAR ON DISNEY WORLD RIDE Woman victim of ‘rocketship’ From RYAN PARRY, US Correspondent A SECOND thrill-seeker has died in a year on a £60million Disney World white-knuckle ride. The woman of 49 left The Mission: Space “rocketshipâ€, which spins riders at 2G forces, feeling dizzy and sick. She was taken to hospital where her condition worsened overnight. She died yesterday. It is believed she may have had high blood pressure. Worried bosses shut The Mission for inspection under the supervision of state safety experts. The ride was later declared safe and reopened. Disney said: “Engineers and system experts completed a thorough inspection of the attraction and found it to be operating properly.†The hugely popular Mission is such an intense experience people have been taken to hospital with chest pains. Sick bags are attached to seats. A warning posted in 2004 read: “For safety you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems or other conditions that can be aggravated by this adventure.†Advertisement Last June four-year-old Daudi Bamuwamye, son of a Ugandan UN worker, died after joining the ride at the theme park in Orlando, Florida. It was later found that he had an irregular heartbeat. The attraction was closed but reopened. Two adults and a girl of 12 also died at Disney World last year. In July Leanne Deacon, 16, of Kibworth, Leics, was left critically ill after collapsing with a heart attack following a ride on the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror elevator. She was flown home by air ambulance
There are ALWAYS risks when riding thrill rides!! However, I guess the big stink is that park operators in the STATES are NOT governed by sanction of the STATE.....therefore, they DO NOT have someone that is paid by the STATE to inspect the rides.......it is up to the parks to inspect their rides!! I think also that JUST BECAUSE it's DISNEY they make it into a HUGE DEAL!! YES it was a death and it IS a big deal........I TRULY feel for the family and friends of that woman but I must admit that if you had ON OUNCE of an idea that you SHOULD NOT go on......STAY OFF!!! I totally enjoyed the ride but HONESTLY thought twice about riding but I have NO prior medical things I needed to worry about!!! SCARED WAS ALL!!! ;D Let's hope that this gets cleared up QUICKLY!!
I don't think that it's that much a problem, that there are no state-paid inspectors for the park as it's in the park operators' own interest to keep the rides work properly, I mean such incidents are just so bad for the image The death of that woman is really horrible, but she was 49 and there were lots of signs, so she knew the risks....actually I think that makes it even more tragic, that she herself is responsible for her death. :-[ The only thing Disney can be blamed for is that the ride is in an environment of undangerous rides, I guess people tend to ignore the signs in such an environment...
It's so crazy what a sad and tragic death this is. I mean you definitely don't think of such a thing when coming to Disney World. I don't think you can blame Disney though, it's everyone's own responsibility if they take the ride or not. I think a lot of people are just not aware of their health conditions or don't assume it can end like this. Julia
wow i didnt see this topic here.. scary... nonetheless considering the amount of people through the parks and the number of things that can go wrong anywhere there is bound to be freak accidents... o well its not stopping me from going on the rides... theres a higher percentage chance of death in a car accident then on these rides.
