Hey Guys I was woundering if someone could answer a few of my questions. I am going to the finals in TO in March but before I go I have a few concerns. 1) When they asked on the phone what department I was interested in I said F&B. I am a little worried now. I have never waitressed before and what happens if I get there and I suck at it. Will I still make enough money to live? And do you split tips with everyone or just keep them on your own? 2) I have read a lot about drinking and parties on this page. I don't drink even though I am 24 and will be legal. Will this mean that I am gonna get left out of stuff and be a bit of an outsider? I want to go for the experience and the fun but I am worried that the fact that I don't drink will leave me the odd person out. Thanks for your help
Hey Fuzzy. Dont worry AT ALL. Hey u know, they will stay pay ur hours ( as far as i know 6.70 dollars per hour) and of course the tables u serve, the tips go to u. And dont worry about not been trained, we get some days of training before going to work. And also dont worry about being on age and dont drinking, there loads that do it like it. U can apply for a wellness apartment if u like, where alcohol and sigras are forbidden. But dont worry, u can enjoy the experience sober, and no one will let u out. So dont worry be happy See ya Robb ;D
Hey fuzzy well doing f&b your pay varies, you start on the same wage as in merch when you do outside carts, etc, then once you moved to a tipped position your wage goes down in order to take the tips into account that you get. Disney make sure the pay is suitable to enable people to live, so your not gona go hungry etc, but i'm sure one of the alumni can tell u how they got on if faced with that scenario. don't worry about drinking, there are a lot of people who for one reason or another don't drink, just cos they don't or are underage. so no way will you get left out! hope that helps Sara xx
As far as I know, they're going to ask you again which part you want to be working in once yo uget to the face to face interview - so you don't need to worry with not being too sure about f&b
yeah chloe you're right. they do ask you again for preference once at the interview, i mean you mite say f&b again but don't mind working in merch etc etc. thats what i did, just cos i'd b happy doin anythin but still got my first choice xxx
Hey! There are lots of people that have never served before they get to Disney. You'll be fine. You'll be outside on the popcorn cart and Trapper Bob's for a while before you even get inside. When you become a server, you will basically live on your tips because you don't make that much an hour...the $6 something is when you are outside and on podium and stuff. I don't know that much as I was in Merch, but you keep most of your tips yourself but you do have to tip out at least the foodrunners. You will be fine. As for the drinking, if you choose to have fun without alcohol that's fine! Just be prepared that drinking and parties are a HUGE part of Commons life. There are plenty of people that have done their year there without drinking. You can still go to the parties and have just as much fun...and you'll be in much better shape at work on Tuesday mornings to make you that much of a better server!! Don't be afraid to get out to the parties and meet people just because you don't drink...if you respect peoples decisions to drink, they will respect yours not too! Shan
Thanks guys for all the info, I feel a little better, still nervous but hey thats they way it goes. No I have no problem with others drinking I just don't because of medical reasons, I get migraines and alchol bothers me\ makes me sick. Also thanks for the info about the wellness room, I'll be sure to ask for one if I get in, I didn't know that they had them there. I'd be sure to make an appearance at the parties I want to be in on all the fun, but really can't do everything. I am sooooooo excited!!!
no probs fuzzy, dont hesitate to ask if you want any more info and hopefully we'll c u out in florida soon xxx
Everyone gets nervous! A word of warning about the wellness apartments, anyone in them, regardless of age, is treated the same...meaning that if you are in a wellness apartment and your underage roommate who likes to drink brings alcohol into the apartment, you too can be terminated. If you don't mind people drinking, it might be better to avoid the whole wellness thing, unless there are other reasons as well. It doesn't mean that your roommates will be any better/worse than in any other apartment. Shan
Really? They would terminate everyone in an appartment for one persons stupid mistake? Okay then. Maybe not the wellness appartment then. I have no problem with people drinking, just thought that would be a situation where more people were in the same boat as me. I don't think that I want to be somewhere that is that restrictive about it. Thanks for the heads up.
There will be lots of people down there who don't drink either! They may not term the whole apartment, but they can. My friend was over 21 and lived with an underager and because the underager was in the apt first, it was wellness...even once the underager turned 21!!! We actually did drink a lot in that apartment though!!! Shan
Shan is it just the wellness apts where people can be terminated if others drink illegally. Someone said on a post a while back that if theres an apt party and some underage people are drinking there-all the apt mates can get terminated. That seems kindof tough if theres 8 of you and its not your party... Thanks... sorry to keep asking u and Dee questions! xxx
I don't wana b in a wellness apt, but jason said good chance i will be seein as i'm 20 when i arrive, eventhough i'm 21 less than 3 weeks after. or i could transfer after that but seems a bit strange. I just don't wana b put into that kinda position with people! xxx
yeah i agree Sara - it would be horrible knowing ur responsible for other peoples actions - never been put in that position i dont think... would not be good xxx
It's not just the problem that you would be responsible for someone else's actions that I would be worried about. It's the fact that you really have no control over them. If someone in the appartment brings in alchol and you don't know about it how can you stop it? And knowing me I'd get myself in trouble for doing something silly like buying a bottle of wine to cook with. All and all it sounds like the wellness appartments are a hastle that I'd rather avoid if I can. I'm all for healthy and alchol\smoke free living but not if it means that I could get fired over it. I'd rather it be a suggestion then a rule.
I can imagine how that'd be one hell of a pressure. I think the idea is that if someone were to bring alcohol in to the apartment - their room mates would have a real reason to make them get rid of it. Nobody wants to get kicked out right?lol
That's just it! You could have your bottle of wine for cooking and that could get you termed in a wellness...but you'd be fine in a regular one. You aren't supposed to smoke in any of the apartments, so you shouldn't have too worry about that too much. You don't have control over your roommates . From experience, I can say that you can tell them as much as you want (and warn them of the consequences of their actions, but in the end your butt is on the line too and you have take care of yourself first), but they don't and may not have to listen. I guess technically, yes, the whole apartment could be termed if there was an underager drinking at a big party, but it didn't happen when I was there. Since then, maybe they tightened things up. Try not to make your apartment the party apartment then you won't have to worry about this, or having things broken, or having things stolen. You'd like to think that people will have respect for your place, but they won't. You may luck out and not get put in a wellness because your birthday is so soon after you arrive. It depends on the spaces they have available. But you can always put in to move. You'll only have been there for 3 weeks, so not really enough time to get settled...although you might not get moved right away so put in for the transfer ASAP. Don't worry about asking us questions!! We like to talk about our stories!!! Shan
thanks shan, when they told me it was likely i would be put in wellness i thought it was kinda weird as its 19 days til i turn 21, but yeah its probs good its soo soon after! xxx
hey for a completely unrelated question, I've read all about the Canadian costume and I was thinking hey that's great I can wear that when it's warm and be confortable for the most part. What happens when it gets cold? Do you get pants, jackets .....anything? Or when it rains? I have been vacationing in Disney when both have occured but I really can't remember.
Hey im not canadian, but im sure that you can wear pants instead of shorts when its cold and when it rains they give you a rainjackey so u can use. See ya Carlos F&B 03-04 Mexico
